Hello there!

Im building a new PC myself, the one thing I was unsure about is getting Windows 7. As a student you can get a copy of the Windows 7 Professional *upgrade* for £30. I'm eligible for that, but obviously as I have a brand new custom build PC it wont have XP or Vista on it.

So I was wondering whether with a copy of Windows 7 Professional upgrade, can I still install a full version of Windows 7 onto my brand new PC or not? Do you HAVE to have XP or Vista already installed to be able to use it?

Thanks in advance

Jamie

Yes you can do a clean install. I've done it a number of times, and once I had to get ms to manually activate my install, still no worries.

If you have not purchased XP or Vista in the past, then I guess you are violating the MS EULA.

Edit: I purchased my keys from the "itsnotcheating" site, so I know those will work, can't be sure about others.

The clue is in the description of the item - Windows 7 UPGRADE.
Like all upgrades before you can use the Upgrade to do a full, clean installation.
However as this is a brand new machine I don't see what OS you are upgrading from.
Without an OS to upgrade from, your Windows 7 install will not be legal.

Hmmm so two different answers. Just can't find a definitive yes or no, the reply I got from Microsoft was an email telling me how to install Windows 7.

It will work as a clean install and activate without any issues.

But

It is an upgrade license so technically it has been used in a way that breaks the EULA.

Up to you!

Just contacted the store and they said I can use it to do a clean install and get a full version even though I don't have a version of Vista or XP. Straight from the horses mouth so I guess it's fine with them, just makes me feel a bit edgy! Thanks very much for your help guys
