Hi all,

I ran the Windows 8 upgrade wizard last night, and it said that if I upgrade I'll need to reinstall all of my compatible apps.

Why is this? I thought all your apps were able to be carried over from Windows 7? I'm on a 64 bit version of Windows 7.

I have it installed to an SSD; some applications are install on the SSD, but most are installed on a second hard drive.

If I go ahead with the update will it wipe all of these applications? Or will they just not work, requiring me to reinstall in order to get them working again?

Thanks

Hmmm, according to this, if upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7, you cannot keep your apps. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8

So, how do I upgrade to just Windows 8 for the time being, seeing as that seems to let me keep my apps?

EDIT: Ok, I know I'm speaking to myself, but I'll update this in case it helps someone else.

Looks like I can just buy a Windows 8 product key and then download Windows 8 (not 8.1) from this page - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

Now I just need to find a legit place to buy a product key.

Can anyone confirm that Windows 7 > Windows 8 (not 8.1) definitely lets me keep my apps?

My only advice is do not update from 7 to 8. Do a clean install of 8, then update to 8.1. I had loads of problems with it trying to do it the easy way.
