Windows 7 x64 vs. windows 8.1

i upgraded fron win7 to win 8.1 and although i loved the new look and feel i ran into a hell of a lot compatabilty problems with games and programes,it was that bad i ended up installing win7 a week later

Funny how OS always get blamed for driver issues by some users which is not fair by any means on any OS,blame the manufacturer of the hardware in question for the drivers.

I'm not blaming the OS for that, I'm referring to its immaturity; the manufacturers have yet to go through iterations of drivers and find what works for everyone's unique setup.

Sorry if I wasn't clear but that is essentially the issue I have with 8.1 in its entirety.

Aside from the quote you make an absolutely fair point and I loved using 8.1. There are a number of lovely built in additions, like the information rich graph that appears when transferring files, out-of-the-box SSD support, smaller footprint, runs on low end systems, a task manager that actually kills programs, improved WoL support, etc.

However, to me it's nothing significant enough over 7 on a gaming rig and I would just rather use third party apps on a mature OS than deal with hardware issues you can face on an immature OS. That's coming from someone who used 8 from release and rolled back to 7 a matter of weeks ago on their main rig.

To be fair gamers like us don't get much new (gaming wise)with every new OS,maybe a new DX version thats about it,nothing much more they can really do for us(unless you count free games in Microsoft Store).
As a gamer myself I have thrown a lot of games at Win8.1 with my Nvidia card from XCOM-Apocalypse(1997 game so pre Win98) using D-Fend to very latest ones like Divinity Original Sin (brilliant game) with no issues.

I even have a laptop with Win8.1(came with Win7 preinstalled) and not had any issues with that,I've thrown Intel,Realtek,Ralink,Nvidia,Asus,Atheros drivers at it to name a few with no issues.
Basically gaming with Steam,Origin,U-Play,Arc,Glyph etc has been solid for me even on my overclocked main gaming rig, gamers know what I'm talking about.

Right back to online gaming for me ;) .

Also improved security on 8.1,I could also mention Win7 mainstream support ends Jan 2015.

The key date for home users is January 14, 2020.

Yeah, this is really FUD. Win7 will stop being supported for home users *at the earliest* in 2020.

Mainstream support ending means almost nothing. Extended support includes regular security patches just like mainstream support does.

I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 and as a UI it's dreadful for desktop use. I'm using Classic Shell and Windows is now usable.

What's "Service Pack Support End Date" all about - was that when support for vanilla Windows 7 stopped?

Basically if that SP isn't the latest SP, then you have X amount of time after the last SP was released to upgrade.

If that SP is the latest SP, then ignore that bit entirely ;)

Windows 8.1 also loads a lot faster than Windows 7.

I'd been using Windows 8 at work for about a year and I didnt like it but used it to keep current for support issues that I was handling.

At home had Windows 7 x64. Then in the clearance sale I got 8.1 for £45 and I could tell the difference it seems a lot more stable than 8.0 and is a lot nippier than Windows 7.

Only issue I have had is GFWL and 8.1 doesnt like it much. I had a big issue getting Dirt 3 to work and GTAIV doesnt start properly either took a bit of doing to get them going.

A lot more stable than Win7? My Win7 hasn't crashed for years. I think I can count the blue screens I've had since 2009 on one hand. Were you having problems with stability on win7?

How exactly is it a lot faster?

8.1. We use 7 at work still, but 8.1 at home - wouldn't consider going back. Once you get used to using 8.1 the Start Menu from 7 loses its appeal.

Windows 8.1 has a major problem.

It randomly spins up storage drives needlessly shortening lifespan due to bad programming in the System process as well as freezing everything while waiting.
Deleting files on c: and clicking on favourites causes it to turn on drives that don't need to be.

edit: I think I tried to find a fix and someone wrote a disk space check task from the System process is what randomly keeps turning on all the drives sometimes.

Describing that as a "major problem" is a little melodramatic. It's a frustrating bug (if that is indeed the case) but I doubt most users even notice - and it's not even an issue if you don't have mechanical drives.
