Windows 8.1 Update 1 arriving on March 11

Actually I take that back about taskbar. Makes it easier when in desktop to bring an app to the front.

All round looks like some nice tweaks, fairly simple stuff. But further refines win8, which is what is needed. Drastic changes will needed continued refinement for a long while, not that it ever stop being refined.

The apps hopefully.

Bing news and bing food need an overhaul.
Mail and weather I find are fine.

And Xbox movies needs a massive overhaul, that's the worst one, especially from a non technical view point.

I keep giving feedback, so its not that they don't know, and a lot lf stuff would be simple to implemented, there's some harder stuff as well though.

Installed the leaks this morning, Must say some of the additions are very welcome, Especially the context menus on the start screen & power button being visible there, It should have been this way since day one.

The things i would like to see in update 1.

Proper start menu returning.
Not having to use third party programs to get "proper" the start menu back.

Been able to create a "Local" user account
None of this must login to a Live mail account.
Of course you can get around this and create a local account but its just extra hassle.

Improved tabbing out,Killing apps.
In windows 7 if you were playing a game that involes running players accross a map you could press shift and tab out..your in game player would continue to run while you were tabbed out...not in windows 8.
Killing "Not responding programs" also is a bit on the iffy side,Sometimes it kills them..sometimes does nothing!

Other than that,I like windows 8..i have metro turned off and straight to desktop.

You don't need a live account, you can create a local account from the get go.

If you're setting up windows 8.1 with your internet connection plugged in it forces you to use an online account. You need to go one step back, unplug your cable, then go forward and it gives you option of local. Bloody annoying that is!

No you don't,
Create new account > scroll to bottom (ignoring live account setup) > sign in without a Microsoft account.

There is no such thing as a proper start menu. They're also not going to bring back the legacy start menu, no chance.

The start screen has made many functional improvements over the legacy start menu, which was a mess really.

It's deliberately misleading. :(

well said...

i wish people would just get over it now

I'm really started to get frustrated with Windows 8. It's the little things that really pile up. Hopefully it starts getting some substantial updates.

Actually it has already been pretty strongly hinted that the Start Menu might be returning in Windows 9. And stop splitting hairs about the term "proper" he's using, unless you're thick you know what he means.

And how was the old Start Menu a mess? Click start, choose program from pin list. If it's not in the pin list either search or go through the folders. Done. Not hard was it?

Ah, will look into that next time I install 8.1 somewhere, didn't know this! Thanks. :)

I think everyone even the computer experienced or people that went from Win95 assume Create new account means creating an live/ms/hotmail account ;)

Its a classic curse

I will however create a local account if I move to win8 in future.
