windows 8 and gaming

So the enable peak off actually removes the input lag? I hope so, I was beginning to think my mouse was going bad.

I had a few issues with gaming after the initial upgrade to 8.1 but after checking Windows updates I found several updates were due and once they had installed everything went back to being excellent. Shame I had to figure that out myself, took a while.

I've only just started using windows 8.1, seems fine so far, getting used to some changes, but pretty good so far.

No problems i have noticed yet, but does seem to be preyty quick.

Any idea if there will ever be a mouse polling rate hack like in windows 7 and previous, where you had to use an unsigned dll to enable high polling rates on mice which didn't support it in the drivers, e.g. MX518?

there is mark c thing you could try might work but i use that mouse on 8.1 its bugged. also if you game in bf4 and thinking about 8.1 there is no difference in performance from 8.0 - 8.1 confirmed by head frostbite engineer .

so with little to no bugs in 8.0 or performance gains to 8.1 8.0 is the sweet spot.

Not had any problems on 8 or 8.1 since I upgraded.

BF4 is running just fine, actually better than I thought it might on my system, so I am happy :)

lets be honest unless you have a tablet why would you not want a start button?

I have an entire menu that pops up when I hit the windows key, seriously I don't quite get what the start menu gives you which the new interface doesn't?

I do tend to use keyboard shortcuts for just about everything though, rarely used the start menu anyway.

Hello all. Gotta rebuild my main PC and have a windows 8 licence. Was wondering if to make the switch. I have used 8 on my laptop for some time and see the speed boast. Just not sure about my main PC and gaming.

Do you need to turn off the mouse gestures ect ect for gaming ?

Any other tweaks or tips?

If you have a license and wish to make the switch I'm sure there won't be any issues. I don't think that the gestures are enabled when you are in a full-screen application anyway.

Even if they are, with 8.1 (or StartisBack/Start8/ClassicShell) you turn them off anyway.

However as for benefits of going Windows 8, I'm not sure what they would be.

Moved to windows 8.1 from windows 7 pro both 64 bit had no problems with gaming expect full version of Civ 4 first two parts don't work but last two newer expansions work.
Also win 7 use to boot up about 4 seconds faster on my SSD.
Have not used any tweaks yet only had it a week still learning how everything works so far I'm happy with it.

That is weird, win 8 was designed to boot faster. Mine boots like a rocket

My system with Win 8.1 non pro boots up very fast but for me Win 7 pro was a about 4 secs faster didn't use a stop watch but notice the speed difference straight away.
Had a lot more files loaded on my Win 7 pro system too an my Win 8.1 is a fresh install.

For anyone that actually learns to use the new interface, it's a lot quicker anyway.

win+x or left clicking on the start button brings up a load of options that have never been quicker to access before.

I found trying to upgrade on an established install just wrecked everything on my computer.

I think a lot of problems with it come down to doing upgrades on old windows installs rather than wiping the drive, then installing windows-upgrade-drivers- programs.

8.1 is great for me, had some mouse lad when I first installed, used the Mark C 1-1 and it's fine now.

Boot straight to desktop and avoid the metro tiles. Simples

I actually much prefer Windows 8 now. Once you have your start menu customised to how you like it with different sections it's actually much faster and requires less clicks to get to stuff, and less precision since the start menu is much cleaner and bigger.

When I first got windows 8 I followed the crowd thinking I needed the start menu button back and even spent like £4 I think on one of the programs around at the time. Now I'm not sure I could go back so easily - that's how much better it feels.
