Windows 8. Anyone just using the built in Defender.

It's all I am using, I don't click on random stuff and I know to keep away from dodgy sites, I must say though I miss the right click option to scan a file/program that was in Microsoft Security Essentials in 7

All I'm using too, however I'm only one that uses my computer and use common sense as well, btw I hear AV is first thing to load up on Win8.

I'm using it and it seems pretty good. I have Avira Pro but they still haven't got it working in W8 which is pathetic, it's not like Microsoft sneaked the OS out.

As soon as you go into the folder it scans them so, whilst it's great from a 'I'd like to check this file' point of view, it isn't really needed as you'd be scanning them twice.

M.

I'll be sticking to it, it's not just MSE though it's MSE + spyware (defender) which was a separate app in Windows 7.

Does make me wonder if they'll get slapped for including it though, much like they did for IE.

I never knew about this till before. I have Avast installed, in the past having more than one Anti-virus software installed used to mess up system bad.
So how come I been running two for couple days no problem? lol Anyway just disabled it I like to have a solid Virus software on my system.

When I did my upgrade I forgot that I had Node32 on my W7. In the past with two Antiviruses installed there were problems.

It seems for me W8 automatically changed defender during the upgrade from the default "on" to "off" as I already had an antivirus is installed.

Hmm, I installed Avast on Win 8 but it seems to have stopped Windows Defender. On my Win 7 PCs both Avast and Defender works together with no problems .

Defender on Windows 8 is not the same beast as Windows 7, it includes Microsoft Security Essentials now too so it covers a huge array of virus/spyware/malware protection.

It disables itself if it sees another non-compatible AV product from what I've read so far.

It's a shame people are getting mixed up about Defender/MSE now we're on Windows 8. It looks like MSE to a lot of people but it's BOTH and it's pretty damn good!

I think its the wording ie "Defender",if they had named it MSE Plus or something like that for Win8 would have been better IMHO.

Couldn't agree more to be honest, I think in their defence they picked the least known name thinking it'd be picked up as "a new product" by most users, but people look at it, see MSE and then go back to any product they were using on Windows 7.

I only stuck with it as I liked MSE and never had any issues whilst using it, the fact it's been improved it simply a lovely added bonus!
