Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

I heard that windows server 8 also has metro, now that i thought was a step too far. when i heard about this windows server 8 i thought i might try that if they had kept all the new features, like explorer and iso support etc but not included the metro and it worked with games. I would have use that instead. But they have gone an included metro on a server operating system. madness.

I am half surprised ms didn't go back to command shell for windows server 8. Have it start with a power shell console or something. They like going backwards it seems.

I was thinking, well by the time blocks 8 comes out hopefully i won't be doing desktop support anymore and would have moved in to more server support so i can avoid this god damn metro. WRONG!!! m$ want to ram it down sys admin throats as well.

It's actually put me off posting in this thread (and the other one) - it would be nice to have a sensible discussion about the pros and cons of Win8, but I really can't be bothered with the purple-faced nerd rage which ensues every time anyone says anything remotely critical.

+1

People need to accept that some people will like it and some people won't. There's valid points for and against.

Its no good raging at someone because you simply disagree with their opinion. Raging ain't gonna get them to change their mind.

I think you may be right here. perhaps we have the equivalent of Pd v mac here...

I have windows 8 now running rather well. I've removed all tiles but the Desktop tile and added in tiles for the likes of photoshop, word etc... and also pinned to the task bar regularly used programs. This will keep me happy as I've absolutely no interest in the metro applications as such. I'm sure I'll use a few, but I bearly use applications on my windows mobile (perhaps 3) and if I'm sat infront of the PC I'd rather just go to the website / use the full application than the cut down metro one.

I think I'll just carry on to butcher metro back into a regular (albeit) full screen start menu and forget about it until I get a tablet where it would be useful, but for the desktop it just seems pointless.

As side from metro, I'm really loving some of the features such as a file transfer window with graphs and pause options.

Nvidia has released the GeForce 296.17 Driver for the preview:

This is a preview GeForce driver to be used only with the Microsoft Windows 8 Consumer Preview. This driver should not be used with Windows Vista, Windows 7, or the Windows 8 Developer Preview.

This driver offers full support for the new Windows 8 display driver model WDDM 1.2.

Any good guides on customising Metro UI?

Sorry if it has been asked or posted before, I'll have a look through the last pages but let me know if anything knew or worthwhile popped up in the meantime.

Windows 8 is amazing on a touch enabled device.

Picked up a Dell Duo for the task, it only has a dual core atom CPU and 2GB ram, but it is extremely fluid.

Having a split screen window of Metro Internet explorer running with my desktop open is really useful. As the main screen does not fight for focus.

I only ever used the Start Menu to hit start, type what I wanted into it and hit return, this still works exactly the same.

It really is very good. I've tried it on a similar specced tablet and it's great. Unfortunately this fact is going to get absolutely eclipsed - rightly or wrongly - by the number of disgruntled desktop users.

Part of me thinks they should just release Windows on ARM with a bunch of tablets before Christmas and give the product a fighting chance to get some of the praise it deserves.
