Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Many people will be downloading now. I'm just glad I got it early on.

I can see the metro style UI being extremely popular for the masses.

First time I've tried W8.

I started the download as soon as the link went live. It's my Virgin connection I bet.

to be honest, i'm not even bothered about metro apps. even if it worked perfectly, i wouldn't use it. it's so cumbersome to use compared to windows live mail or even the webmail. i won't moan anymore. :p

but is the whole point of beta not to report these issues so MS can rectify them if they were unaware of it. they might of had no issues with the small scale it was tested on 'in house', your discovery could be just what they need.
or is the beta just so people have muck around with something new for free?

EDIT : you edited whilst i was typing lol

My first issue is my creative sound card drivers (what a surprise) I cannot change my flexijack from linein to microphone. Downloading the 40mb driver off their website... been going 20 minutes so far with another 13mins to go.... wtf is with creative website, are they hosting it on a Pentium 3 machine with dialup from the bottom of the ocean?

Thus far that is my only problem and hopefully the windows 7 control panel works with windows 8 otherwise im not sure what ill do.

Wait.... I noticed you can right click and unpin from the taskbar. The unwanted apps go so your left with only the tiles you wish to view.

yeh i knew you could manually remove them, sorry should have said and saved you time looking lol. but honestly, MS should be able to automate this?
a lot of the programs i had issues with, even gave you the option to 'add shortcut to desktop' which obvs it did, but could MS not of linked this command to not only add it to desktop, but add it to the metro tiles, rather than just add what would normally go in the startmenu?

Well because I have a MBA the driver for right click wasn't installed for boot camp and I thought all right click was removed. Turned out that if I installed the drivers it works now and I can fully right click.

I am assuming Microsoft want users to go to mobile devices because as it feels today I am unsure if it's a nice desktop os.

ah pain, i should have said though, my bad.

my edit about the desktop shortcut thing, surely possible for MS to do, and if there is no option to add to desktop from the software, you just add to metro tiles the same way you used to have to add to desktop?
its simple things like this that to me seem soo obvious, but MS overlooked it and your metro tiles can soon look awful if you dont keep ontop of it.

Any sign of the 'Modern Reader' ? Heard this was going to be their answer to adobe reader

it's a full screen metro app. not much to say about it really.

I would just like to say for the second I had this installed right to now I can safely say as it stands the interface is lovely, very fluid and dynamic, extremly fast and everything works out of the box (except right click, MBA but a quick driver install sorted that one)....

but this feels like a touch screen os and I feel it will only be successful with touch devices. Since owning iDevices this really feels like an Apple product to me, which I don't think they meant to do.

This is my overall opinion on it and hopefully will have a bit more play to see if I change my mind.

So far I'm quite enjoying this, Although I don't like msn being full screen, I imagine I can just download an old version & use that though.

The weather app is showing the temp in Fahrenheit I think, Anyone got any idea how to change it to Celsius? Can't see an option anywhere.

It is going to take a while to get out of my old ways with this though.
