Windows 8 Consumer Preview Thread

Yup,

They release half of them in .rar files, what are they thinking?!

zip, I could maybe understand if they released beta drivers in zip files. They should be at least unpacking exe's if not proper installers

It's history repeating itself yet again. The worst companies for updating drivers have always been sound card manufacturers. Creative have always been particularly bad at this. Another poor area has been scanners - I'm sure there's some logical reason behind this!

Also what are you guys using for virus checking on Windows 8 ?

You dont need AV software on Win 8. It has it built in, Windows Defender now uses features from Microsoft Security Essentials, which used to be a separate download and is one of the best AV programs around.

Theres also Smart Screen Filter, which will warn you before running any known dodgy programs:

Both are enabled by default.

I think I managed the bootable usb pen drive in the end for Win 8 Consumer Preview but I had to use the command line advice here http://www.sumedh.info/articles/install-windows-xp-usb-flash-drive-eeepc-asus.php for bootsect.exe. It said it had copied some byte code I think to the usb but only by doing it manually with the command prompt rather than "Win 7 USB/DVD tool" doing it. I don't have the 64bit system to test it yet but if it doesn't work I'll give that suggestion of yours a try @groen thanks for that and to others for their suggestions.

For those whose Windows 7 boots are broken, the simplest way to fix is as follows:

Copy Windows 7 to USB stick or DVD as if you were going to install it.
Boot from said device
Proceed as if you are going to install choosing "custom"
Format the 100mb partition that appears but don't delete it
Restart windows and boot from USB or DVD again
This time, at the Install screen choose "Repair my computer" and choose Startup Repair

Voila

Anyone had these problems in Windows 8?

1. When using a Microsoft Account to login it refuses to remember my network credentials when logging into shares.

2. Has anyone tried to change drive letters through Disk Management? Typically I move my optical drives to the end of the alphabet. Every reboot they've reset back to the first available drive letters?

Cheers

Ok, thought I would test what you asked out.

1, I have never had any problem with the Microsoft Account login - except when I get muddled fingers and can't type the password! This aspect seems fine - to me.

2. I changed a disk letter to z: and rebooted. Everything was fine and the disk had kept it letter and not reverted. if you have problems, though, I would report it to Microsoft (if you can find out how) since it might be something about your configuration or hardware. Edit. Tried it out with my laptop as well - no problems to report.

Hmmmm…thanks for the feedback guys.

For all 3 of my servers, it needs credentials everytime I log in - even when I ask it to remember them. When checking Credentials Manager, it shows "Persistence" as "Logon Session". Editing won't allow me to change the Persistence, but adding a credential manually sets it to "Enterprise" by default.
