A bad one if you want to buy it. I have not looked on OCUK at their pricing but when looking on MS's site today you can buy the UPGRADE for £189.99. You wouldn't catch me dead buying an Operating system of this substandard detail, especially an Upgrade!
What is this, now you've gottem now grab 'em.
I know this Operating system must be costing them billions because it has fallen flat on its face. Hiking the price is just going to encourage piracy. Mind you it would have to be some pour desperate pirate to reproduce this rubbish.
I just don't understand the reason for such a price hike. People could probably absorb £50 but near enough £200 is an insult to people's intelligence.

Oddly enough if you'd had the intelligence to pre-order it like hundreds of thousands of others then you'd have gotten it for a fraction of the price, you're cost of £200 is slightly daft seeing as you can get it for less than half that at dozens of outlets with the minimum of effort.

So it's clearly rubbish because you can't use a search engine, thanks for your reasoned, evidenced comments, I'm glad you brought this up as we've never had a Windows 8 bashing thread on here..

Try here if you're finding Windows 8 expensive;

I have to agree, from a support point of view, I am having a bootful of HP probooks sent back to me to image with W7 as a downgrade as the 8.1 upgrade just doesnt make it any better and staff had lost all productivity trying to figure it out.
After spending hours trying to make it more user friendly, gave up as the 8.1 wouldnt install until all of the HP security software was removed then tried its very best to not let me into the laptop until I had signed in with a MS login. Screw that.

Too many workflow and usability issues with Windows 8. That's what you get for road-killing a touchscreen tablet interface onto a mouse/keyboard desktop.

It is funny you say something like that to Flame the thread, because I was making astute observation public that is all.
As for Search engines well put ignorance in your search engine and you may find your name next to it.
I have tested the Windows 8 Control and functioanlity as well as its Desktop which looks like a slab of Neopolitan Ice Cream on a Blue Screen. Its Desktop Interface is Pathetic and you have to go searching for the Applications to place shortcuts onto it.
I like my Applications on the desktop where they are supposed to be and not flashing up onscreen like some kind of cheap video created out of Flash.
If I wanted a Tablet Operating system I would have purchased a Tablet. As it is I have a Computer and as such I wish to treat it as such and not a toy. If you want to criticise anyone criticise Microsoft. I was merely point out the price point and what leads to piracy in the first place.
I have posted on another thread my full opinion of Windows 8 and its search Engine was one of its redeaming points. Only when you drop to the Desktop you have to go searching for all the basic applications which are the gateway of your PC anyway. Things that would be in the menu like Device manager and My Computer etc. etc. Then you get to installed programs where you have to find those and pin them on the Desktop too.
The most annoying thing about the Search engine I found was that it looked on the Internet as well as the Computer for files and information. Rather silly if I am trying to find my own files or Applications. It shows that all search engines unless restricted are all dumb and Boolean or otherwise it should have some kind of control on it.
You may find them at a cheap price elsewhere but they are all the Christmas release of the Upgrade which was finished officially on the 1st of Feb. On MS site it was advertising then at £89.99, but hiked its pricing recently. Most probably to boost sales of the early released version to clear them off the market before the 8.1 release date.

I assume you mean logging in after the setup phase? You know you can get around this by selecting the use local account setting.

Back to the topic of the thread, you should never go direct to MS as their prices are usually a lot more than any other retailer.

I can't see what all the fuss is about personally, yes its different but its not hard to use or get used to. I am rolling it out in one of my schools that I look after during the 6 weeks hols and have given staff their new laptop to have a play with already and have not had any major issues... yet. ;)

It was very buggy, had all sorts of errors, netplwiz, weird permission errors when signed in as Admin etc Even the magnifier tool kicking in for no reason and the mouse and desktop not working properly, as if the mouse was offset by half an inch to the side.
Would it be fair to say that the school pcs are tightly locked down so there isnt really very much to go wrong/have to relearn?
I worked on the Clasroom2k stuff here in Ni and you could do nothing but the very basic stuff on those pcs which also helped keep required OS knowledge very basic.

A thief will steal (pirate) regardless of the price. If OCUK sell a graphics card which is out of some people's budget it doesn't mean people should rob their warehouse.

I think you need to check yourself and nobody is forcing you to like Windows 8. Don't like it then don't buy it!!!

When you roll out a new product you need to have support ready in terms of training, this is the norm for most organisations but for some reason people are having a hissy fit because for once they have to do it to support the operating system.

That's simply lack of planning, Windows 8 is absolutely fine if you're given half an hours worth of training, it's not a poor product because your organisation can't get it's act together. Additionally I can't see how it's Microsofts fault that an HP product is causing issues, that's part of IT Supports role to figure this out before deploying etc.

It is funny you say something like that to Flame the thread, because I was making astute observation public that is all.

If you don't want it why get worked up about the price? Your argument makes no sense, it's essentially:

WAAA AWAAAA WAAAAA I DONT WANT A TOUCH SCREEN OS AND I FOUND A HANDFUL OF THINGS THAT MAKE ME UNEASY AS I DONT LIKE CHANGE WAAA WAAA

and

THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME TOO MUCH FOR SOMETHING I DON'T WANT ITS NOT FAIR WAAAAAAAAAH.

So what is it - do you want it or not? If not then what's the point of bitching about about it? Your problem is you don't like change, device manager etc are almost identical to Windows 7, don't like it? Dont' buy it but you add nothing to the conversation by whinging about something you don't even want and highlighting changes which many people would argue are improvements.

I have Windows 8 on my main PC and I personally much prefer it to windows 7
I got the upgrade for £25 back when it was released so it was a no brainer really

Went to upgrade my laptop yesterday from Windows 7 Home Premium and it wanted the full £189.99 down the official microsoft channels which is ridiculous. Especially when i can by the OEM copy for £114.99 from Overclockers! So much to my disappointment I'm having to stick with Windows 7

There are also no student deals on Windows 8 which it outrageous! I thing I paid about £30 to upgrade an XP laptop to Windows 7 Professional!

So much for staff being flexible and adaptable, they would have got sacked if they could not figure it out with or without training.

End of the day I wonder if the average office user is getting dumber each year.

Win8 is really easy to use and when I see posts like above I do wonder what people in offices get paid for?....obviously its not their intelligence.

Microsoft made a big thing recently about Piracy and fraud and even assisted in some prosecutions. If this is the case why is it making itself a target once again. To buy an upgrade at the price they are publishing it at is beyond ridiculous.
Microsoft was also complaining about its missed targets when selling Windows 8, how do they expect to meet them now. Who would buy directly from Microsoft anyway when they cannot make their mind up if this is a Desktop Operating system or something a bad Doctor is trying to push upon a patient.
The Idea of having an operating system which supports new and upcoming hardware is one thing but to make things worse for themselves by adding to their own requiem is pathetic. They are withdrawing support for the most sturdiest of O/S they have produced next year and replacing it with an interface even the Jetson family wouldn't put up with.
There are some good points as I have mentioned to Windows 8 but they fall by the wayside if the interface just isn't manageable. The interface reminds me of the time when they first introduced the Media centre. Every interface since then has copied the role. All things like HP printer suite interfaces use a Home Page, along with Nero, iTunes and so on. Any thing that wants to take over my Desktop without my permission is an interferance. I like access to my programs and interfaces on my terms and not Microsoft's. There is no choice to have even the Classic interface like previous releases of Windows. This is why Windows 7 almost failed. If people could have a Desktop it would have been rejected by the User. Because of so many problems and the "Failure to Launch" approach windows sales are down by any standards. Also who wants to logon to the Internet and Microsoft every time you start Windows 8. Is this BIG Brother is watching you? That is my first and biggest reservation when using Windows 8. Even selcting a Local policy it still Logs onto Microsoft as soon as you boot the O/S.

Classic interface like hitting the windows key + D ? The only thing missing is the start menu and as you whinged about earlier in a similarly pointless post you like to have your icons on your desktop - which you can still do, or you can pin them to the taskbar, heck that's very like the quick start menu on Windows XP.. now isn't that nice.

Whinge whinge whinge, not a coherent argument anywhere, randomly clutching at random whingey-branches in an attempt to create an argument which doesn't exist - we get it, you dont' like it. We don't care.
