I created a bootable usb with Windows 8 on it around launch time. Is it possible to create one with all security updates etc up to this point? Saves downloading them all again.
Says you. There are an awful lot more that would disagree with you. I personally think that it's a dogs breakfast that you learn to work with - the changes make no improvement to workflow at all unless you're using a touch interface, and what does the majority of MS's user base use? Mouse and keyboard... foolish.
You're solely looking at the Metro UI and judging the entire o/s on that. I agree the Metro UI is not great for desktops, which is why I suggested they used both. The rest of the o/s is either the same or better than Windows 7 but people don't look at that they only focus on the one thing they dislike.
I guess I should make an addendum to my comments - I use Windows 8 every day, I have no issues with it for my every day use and on the whole enjoy it as an OS now that I have Start installed. Up until that point I found metro to be a flow breaker that was annoying in that it shifted focus from my work. I do very much like the look, it's clean and for the most part methodical. Removing the start button was un-needed and struck me as being an 'Apple' moment -i.e. doing something different for the sakes of the difference. However I happily use it and will continue to - Personally I think that it's the telling fact when I come home, turn on my Windows 7 machine, there is not a single thing that I miss from W8.
The lack of differentiation (read improvement) beyond a change for changes sakes, the lack of intuitive use for the luddite user and ultimately the shift from the familiar I believe has given MS an uphill battle. Standing on its own it's a great OS - in context it's an confusing proposition that needs direction. IMO
I have and do regularly - W7 on a tablet is bloody average. I have the misfortune of having to work with Atom powered Motion tablets. I've also had the misfortune of using both the SONY VAIO Duo 11 and the RT based tablets. They're markedly better than the W7 based ones but as an overall experience they still don't 'gel' quite a well as iPads or Android based devices. It's the 'cake and eating it' syndrome in my opinion. Kudos for MS for greatly improving the experience but I've found using the OS on a touch screen based laptop or a touch screen desktop to be a vastly better experience. Mostly because there are instances where a better mouse/touchpad and click input works better - and especially when the keyboard gets a broader use. Pretty much the best keyboard experience that I've had is with Androids Thumb Keyboard but that still pales next to a nice tactile input device. But that is only my opinion. Some people have no issue with them at all.
