Windows 8 pricing question

Lol. Just because it's from an eBay shop does not mean it's legit.

Correct,I got a copy on there for £29 and it activated fine..all was good for a few weeks then bam..windows update and my copy was no longer genuine..so i contacted Microsoft, asked them to do a check on my Product key and they said they had blacklisted it as it had been activated on loads of other machines..seller obviously sold loads of people the same key.

I got my money back of course via claim in Ebay,But you do have to watch out on Ebay as it might activate at first but down the line could end up in the same situation as i had.

LOL you listened to someone that told you not to buy w8 pro when it cost only £25 and now your moaning it going cost you much much more to upgrade to w8...

Its not going to cost me more though is it?..because i wont pay those sort of prices..il just wait for a copy to show in the MM market,or someone has a deal on,Im in no rush windows 7 is doing me okay right now.

At the time i did not really want it because of the lack of start, metro which seems kind of pointless but all this seems to be changing in 8.1 you can customise it much more.

Well I've just gone for 1 that was listed for £20. Any problems and I'll have to claim it back but thought it worth a punt at that ;)

Why?
Congratulations - you've just paid a pirate for some illegal copy of the software.
It's either going to be a pirate copy or it will be a TechNet key which you are NOT allowed to resell.
When a product is £75, £20 is indeed "too good to be true" - it's just not legit.

If you didn't want to spend £75 on something then you should have simply pirated it yourself for £0. What you've just done is give someone £20 and you've got a copy of the OS that is as legit as if you had just pirated it yourself.
Nicely done.

hmm was not aware of the issues, these guys doing it for 20-30 quid on fleabay have a 100% rating and still up there though ?

Still I guess if it sounds too good to be true.... I just figured these guys musta brought 100s for them for 24.99 and then sold them on for 30 quid to make a quick profit, guess there are issues down the road for any of them.

I think its better then to spend the £50-60 and get a boxed version with key..

Regret not buying one for 25 quid when ms did the offer...

£75 ... what's £75? Whenever I look for Windows 8 legit prices I get a figure of £99.99.

I'm hanging out for the 8.1 release and hopefully a discounted price.

you can install the upgrade and then run the upgrade on top to activate I hear;)

see stoofa's post above. the only difference is that you're ending up even more out of pocket.

what's the point in paying money to end up in the same position legally as someone who just stole it? this absolutely baffles me....

Old business model. This is Microsoft we're talking about.

Can people upgrade from pirated copies of 7 to a legit version of 8?
Well, have a think about what you just said - by definition the answer is "no." :p

You may or may not end up with a *functioning* installation of Win8, but I wouldn't bank on it, or that you won't run into problems at some point down the road.

I bought it for 25 quid even though I still have no intention of installing it for the moment (worried about my whole pc setup losing saved games etc. )

Also I've had to face a barrage of complaints from my wife when I moved her to IMAP even though it's more secure since my server is backed up every evening whereas my PC never gets backed up since I store all important stuff on the cloud.

Why wouldn't anyone buy something at 25 quid it's a snip for an OS and windows 7 taught us to be early adopters.

I've just seen a few people mention this is what they've done and it worked fine.

I've actually done this with a non genuine windows XP pro install and it's still working without issues, so it should work with a non genuine windows 7 install (the upgrade program doesn't check the authenticity of the OS it'll be upgrading).

The point I was making (which you seem to have missed) is that you won't have upgraded to a "legit" version of Windows 8 - it's entirely up to you what you do of course, but I was simply answering the question as you asked it.

Can people upgrade from pirated copies of 7 to a legit version of 8?
it can be done but it still won't be technically legit because you haven't got a win7 license.

having the os software means nothing really. it's the license part thats important. when buying software / games your paying for the license not the software. you can obtain the software by download or whatever has long as you bought a license for it.

I'll just buy Win 8.1 on release and do a clean install then, Captain I did get your point but you did say in your post you may or may not end up with a functioning Windows 8 and by that I thought you meant there's a chance things will go wrong.
