Windows 8 User thread

Downloaded EasyBCD, but it's done nothing. Probably because the installer moved everything into the windows.old folder.

reformat time. >_>

Repairing your bootfiles is going to be quicker than reformatting. Also, for the future you should probably get your hands on some imaging software such as Macrium Reflect (which is free) that will allow you to image your active partition and quickly recover from any accidents with the boot files.

They kinda swing a little bit whenever I click on them but nothing happens after that. It's probably something to do with the 32-bit version.

I have the 64bit version and have the same problem.

It turns out Microsoft hate displays less than 1024x768 which means my little netbook won't be able to properly utilise the metro thingy.

It works when connected to a larger screen though.

I don't know about you, but I'm finding this preview release to be very solid OS. I beta tested Win Vista, and Win 7, and finding this easy.

I think this is mostly just a UI upgrade with only a little bit of work done to the Kernal which is probably why it seems to be as stable as it is (and also why all the Win 7 drivers work fine).

anyone figured out how to zoom out on the metro UI with keybord and mouse. This gives you more options of moving stuff around and naming pages.

No. there is a absolutely huge amount of work.

Oh, I thought they only made optimisations to the Kernal from Windows Vista/7? (not that it isn't obvious they've put a lot of work into this)

Apparently it's not possible at the moment or so the internet says. I've been trying all manner of keyboard and mouse combinations but nothing has happened.

.

They've added a ton of APIs and also how things communicate with each other. I keep banging on about it, but yesterday's keynotes is a great insight, to just how much has changed and how much is possible.

It really isn't just a UI.

Why didn't they make a mail app and music app.

I hope they open up a beta store for beta build and allow developers to put trial apps up.
Would love to use and see some.

Flying around metro quite happily now, just a lack of apps to use in it.

Out of curiousity, what sort of hardware are you running it on? Also, do you know if all the Fancy GUI stuff is specific to certain graphics cards (like some W7 features were). I will be trying this on a HP box that has some sort of Intel built in graphics tomorrow.

E6300?
7600gto? or something around there, so pretty old specs.

There's not really any flashy graphics. Its more just live data and how things are collected from online sources and then displayed.

As far as I know no limitation on gfx card. However there are limitation on pixels.

I think it's ~1366px width you get all the split screen options. Under that you get some options and below that you don't get split screens. Something like that anyway.

Did a quick google search but couldn't find it anywhere. It's in yesterdays keynotes but that's like over two hours long, has anyone got better memory and can remember it in better details.
