I keep getting error code 0x8007232B, "dns name does not exist". Typical of this stupid activation system to fail. Anyone know how to fix it?

I had the same issues with my Vista Business Edition.

I have just successfully activated it by entering the MAK key again.

I clicked on the change product key button and pasted in the same key which I used to install Vista. However, this time it activated on the first attempt.

Maybe worth trying this and seeing if it works for you!

This is what I found when I googled your error message, Might sort it out :) Other people on the link also said it fixed their problem.

I've tried that but it doesn't work.

I can't contact microsoft support either because they charge an extortionate £240 for email support, disgraceful that they don't even offer free product support for their products like every other company in the world!

hmm very strange indeed, £240 is quite a rip off I must say. The only thing I can think of is giving Microsoft a call.

Did you try this method also?

run the following commands in an elevated command prompt:

slmgr.vbs -ipk <Windows activation product key or MAK key>

A message should appear saying that the product key was successfully changed. Then, type in the following command:

slmgr.vbs -ato

And the Windows system will be successfully activated after a while.

Sorry if you have just making sure :)

Crazy thought, have you actually set up DNS properly on the PC? If your getting a DNS related error, check the root of the problem. Make sure the DNS addresses are correct and pingable, also make sure DNS client service is running correctly. May also be worth pinging 127.0.0.1 to check the TCP/IP stack has installed correctly.

LOL @ £240 for support. WTF is the point in having support if it costs more than the software did. For £240 you could go and buy two more Windows licenses and try activating those before it became economically viable to subscribe for support.

what v of vista is it?

if you've tried everything (try it again with UAC off maybe), then i'd consider a format, since i can't find anyone on the net with the same problem unresolved..

Judging by Mattey1's link, it sounds like you're you trying to install a corporate version on a home PC? It might be looking for a Key Management Server on a corporate network using DNS.

Hmm, sounds a bit dodgy. Legal version?

If it wasn't a legal version I wouldn't be having any of these problems in the first place. :p

Yeah it's x64 Enterprise Edition. Even if I connect to the uni network using vpn though I can't get it to work.

Set your Preferred DNS Service IP address to the IP Address of the UNI's DNS Server.

How do I do that? I just have to hope vista doesn't crash again before I can do it, I've already had 2 bsod's in a couple of days, very unstable!
