Always on the M1.....
Running Windows XP with all the updates, running a virus scan and anti-spyware with regular scans and this keeps popping up, although only recently and I haven't installed anything recently to cause it that I can see.

Any idea what this means? Keeps popping up and my system is running really slowly and programs take an age to load. Seems to only happen when I load up a program although I can't say it's only when I load a program.

Any thoughts?

After doing a little searching on the microsoft site the only reference i can find is to do with a memory address error, and it says that its most likly a dodgy stick of ram causing the problem.

Download memtestx86 and leave it running overnight to see if it can find any errors.

ah sorry about that, didnt know about the PM'ing being disabled.

The good news is, that there is no sign of virus or spyware in that log.

The bad news is this doesnt help you much :(

However one thing your log does show is that you have far too many things in your startup. All the items beginning 04 are programs that start up when your PC logs on, the more you have the slower your machine goes.

It would be a really good idea to go through your add/remove programs and uninstall anything you dont use any more.

Then go to START > RUN and type in msconfig, click the startup tab and untick anything you dont want starting up. dont worry about damaging things as you can undo it all when you next reboot.

As for the memory error, tyr removing a stick of memory from your PC and see how it goes, if you still get the error, then put it back and remove another.

MSCONFIG is a debugging utility so it shouldn't be used for long-term. If after you have used it you find you are happy with the way things are, you should remove the registry entries for those startup items you have disabled.

You can either do it manually by using regedit or by some other third party software, or you can go see if the startup programs in question have an option to turn off their startup with windows option. Not all programs do so you may be forced to manually remove the entries.

Just like to mention that messing around in your registry can really screw up windows so make sure you back up your registry before making any changes. Having said that, as long as you are careful and delete the exact entries, you wont cause any problems. I mess about in my registry all the time - nothings broken yet :D

In fact you can use the HJT program to remove the reg entries, just put a tick next to the corresponding item in the list. HJT will also create a backup of the changes made too :)

Just dont fix anything else using HJT as you can screw up your system :)
 
Possibly a slightly odd question but are you using McAfee as your AV software? There is a bug in the AV service in some version of the engine that causes the above problems. Of course the other more obvious possibility is that you've got a dodgy RAM chip. Run memtest86+ as previously mentioned to find out :)
 
Running McAfee, up to date as possible, so will look into that.

Have known that I have too many things running, doesn't seem to cause too much slow down, although if I'm gaming I tend to exit most of the memory intensive stuff first. Will run Memtest overnight and let you know how I got on.

Using couple of month old Corsair memory, so will be a bit peeved if that fails, bearing in mind that was the replacement for my Ballistix that failed!

Thanks for prompt replies - will post and let you know what the outcome is. Fingers crossed the memory is okay...
 
Looks like good old Logitech have done their usual trick of adding loads of completely unneccessary protocols so that you can use what is essentially a standard keyboard. You can delete all those with Hijackthis and it'll still work fine.

I don't know what O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nvappfilter.dll is so you could download lspfix and if it decides you should remove it then you can. Hijackthis won't fiddle with LSP settings as it may kill your internet, but lspfix seems to know what it's doing.
 
nvappfilter.dll is part of the Nvidia Firewall. That is if you have an Nvidia based motherboard :D and onboard LAN.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nTrayFw] C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\bin\nTrayFw.exe is the program that calles the DLL file.

I had a problem with Mcafee doing the same thing. Check to see if you can still see Mcafee in the Add/Remove as when I had updated the software a number of times from there live updates it caused problems with the software and then when removed causled the same error you have.

Have you tried removing Mcafee?

As stated it is part of the nvidia tools, dont fix it with LSPfix or you may cause more problems.
 
Didn't get chance to run memtest last night, but when turned on PC this morning, had half a dozen windows saying "Generic processes for Win 32" (or something like that) has been disabled to protect my computer. Each time it wanted me to send an error report to MS, but surprise surprise, it didn't know how to fix it...! Forgot this has happened before but only turn on my PC every few days at most, so had forgotten about it.

Was looking at nLite a few months ago - think I may give this a go if I/we can't figure this out and then be absolutely fascist about what I install and allow to modify the registry. Bloody thing just seems to get more and more bloated...

Reinstalled WinXP Home exactly as I've done before. Rather bizarrely, when I try and boot up, unless I have the WinXP CD in the primary DVD drive, it comes up wit "Boot disk error, insert system disk and press enter to continue". With the disk in, it works perfectly.

I've looked at my drives and found things like boot.ini etc that I would expect to be there and I can't see any reason why it shouldn't work.

Any suggestions?

Incidentally, have had no more error messages or stopped services. Hopefully the memory is okay, as have yet to run Memtest.
