Windows Home Server Questions?

Is it a normal windows gui? Only reason I ask is I've got some defrag software I'd want to install and run on it.

I would be extremely careful with defrag. The theory of WHS is for the average consumer you just turn it on and never RDP on to it. The filesystem, though browsable is very proprietary and doesn't really follow the normal file system formats.

For this reason I'd advise against running defragging tools on WHS, unless they explicitly say they are supported/certified for use on WHS.

Oh. Alrighty, well thanks for the heads-up :).

Ideally I'd love to set it up and then never have to connect, but I just can't help myself with these things!

Great thread guys and a good read as i've been thinking about setting up WHS. Maybe already covered and i've missed but be kind.
What would be the minimum spec for processor and ram to run WHS ? Reason for asking is that i've ugraded my pc and have most of my old one hanging about and was thinking of making it into a WHS with a few drives to mostly store my media files.

Thanks, seems like it could be a goer then as my old set had an AMD 64 Athlon 2.0Ghz and with 512 ram.

That would be fine as a standard WHS! Only need a meaty processor if your using tversity and other apps not standard to WHS.

AFAIK there are only paid for ones. Nothing else is compatible.
I use Avast! WHS edition. You also get a plugin for the WHS console and it keeps track of all Avast antivirus installed on every iother machine.

Hmm reading around, and from what some of you guys have said, is it worth risking installing anything? Seems to me (I'm going to be installing it and configuring it tomorrow) that it'd be best left alone completely once setup?

Would I be better going Server 2003 if I want to install more programs, defrag, anti-virus etc, bit torrent downloader? Seems a bit overkill for a server really but I can do more with it..

It is a server at the end of the day, so you can have apps running off it. For example I have uTorrent running on it.

On mine I use from the desktop:
uTorrent on the rare occasion I need game patches etc.
Handbrake (I rip DVD's using AnyDVD)
TwonkyServer for my media.

Everything else is done through the console.
And the AntVirus is required to me!

Why would you even need defrag software?

Cheers for the link, I take it the NTFS/streaming data corruption problem was solved in SP2?

Just used to having defrag software on discs that have heavy activity but I guess for a storage server its unnecessary.

the iso for WHS?
Just make sure you alter the boot device priority for cd/dvd drive first.
It can take a while to fully install (depending on your rig), but i didn't really have any issues.

Aye, I've just set windows server 2003 installing as it read the dvd no problems, but wouldnt read the dvd I'd burned of WHS. Wonder if its something to do with using a Sony blank dvd. Shouldnt have thought that would cause a problem though.
