Windows Home Server Questions?

Shadow copies are turned off.

I've run spacemonger, and really can't see anything on D:\ that would be taking up 550GB.

Hmm after some digging, it looks like D:\Folders\{000...., etc are taking up about 500GB, and thats the backup folder. Not sure what its backing up though as duplication is turned off on all my shares.

Have you guys deleted a bunch of folders lately, or removed computers from WHS?

I usually see the system expand when I'm doing stuff like that, but after letting it balance or a backup clean up then it settles back down to the 20gb mark.

How long has it been reporting as high as this?

Thats usualy one of two things in my experience.
Either you have files on the D:\ drive not in shares or most likely you've deleted a large amount of data.
It can take some time for demigrator to kick in and reclaim that space from the tombstones.

I've just checked and my System folder is still at 520GB, so four days of no activity on the server (other then streaming music across the network) doesn't seem to have had any effect.

If it was something that was deleted and the share is still there you could turn off duplication for that share for a few minutes, that usualy kicks demigrator in the rear so to speak.
If not there is an addon over at Wegotserved to manualy force a drive re-balance.

Was going to suggest the opposite and put duplication on for another folder, looking at screen shot only 3.4GB is duplicated. But yep, if it's a bog standard install of WHS and you've not been poking about directly in the share folders then I'd try forcing some balancing to take place.
