Windows is too stable these days

Hmm I just noticed its a Vista workstation , that actually is quite a good feat :p

I thought it was Windows 7 initially.

Vista was never really unstable if you had the latest hardware which had fresh drivers early on. After the first year and a bit it was all go though and post SP1 it was as stable as ever. I had x64 since day 1 and didn't really have any issues with anything.

Massive uptime for huge e-penis or a patched box?

A patched box.
This isn't about e-penis. I simply didn't realise it has been so long since I have rebooted my workstation. Then it occurred to me the reason I hadn't realised is because Windows is simply unbelievably stable these days.

Skipping updates on a networked PC isn't usually the best idea, even if it hurts your uptime numbers.
Agreed.

Our server has had 100% uptime since we installed the UPS :D

This machine has an UPS. Actually I think the last time it was rebooted back in May last year was when I replaced the 10 year old battery in the UPS.

My Win7 desktop is on 82 days and counting. I really should install a load of Windows updates, but they need a reboot and I quite want to get to 100 days first :p

Reboot every day. Doesn't feel right trusting Windows to happily tick along, lol

Those days are over, really! Any version of Windows based on the NT kernel (2000 onwards) can generally be trusted to tick over happily for weeks on end, providing the hardware is stable and the latest service packs and drivers are applied.

Once you start using sleep mode, you never go back to shutting down! :D

My main pc regularly seems to wake itself up in the night on sleep and fail to go back. With a 480gtx I don't want it running without me.

What if you don't even use sleep mode? Even after buying an SSD for the OS? :p

I switch drivers and fiddle with hardware too often these days to warrant a long-term operation on my desktop but not long ago I could go for weeks without a single reboot since S3 sleep state is so much better than waiting for your machine to boot up.

Then you're missing out :D

I hate shutting down now. It's not so much the 30-second boot-up time as the hassle of getting your applications back to their previous state and waiting for Windows to do its caching wizardry. Sleep mode does wonders for your workflow.

True. These days I abhor updates/sortware installs that require a reboot. First world problems eh? :p

Edit: This has been lurking on my desktop since New Years Day

I installed a new version of GIMP, which works fine without a reboot ta very much

There is no caching wizardry with an SSD, you log in and it's there, everything loads instantly in one go :p

I might use sleep if I go away for a few days but even then I tend to send NZBs to the PC from my phone directly so downloads are waiting to be watched upon my return.

I just can't shut down dammit!

Well, if you never power down in any way at all, better still :p I would just leave the machine on all the time, were it not for the lecky bill and the noise disturbance at night (PC is in bedroom!)
