Windows is too stable these days

No issues here as the clocks downclock on normal idle use and my fans are laptop quiet so both criteria are met!

Win 2k box onsite running SQL 24/7 with its reboot birthday on the 14th Jan. Had to restart SQL services a few times to clear some memory leaks but otherwise all ok.

Windows is as stable as you make it. If you tweak the hell out of it and install a lots of apps it is not likely to stay on long. I personally dont even feel 1 year uptime for a good install of Windows is that long.

I am sure our print server was well over a year too before I moved it to VMware.

What are the boot up times like on sleep without an SSD? Mine was installed in 2009 and it slowly starting to take a good minute once Windows has loaded to settle back down again after all the services start.

I have been on a customers site who had an NT4 server with over 1300 days uptime. By this point they were all too scared to reboot it as nobody knew how to re-install and configure the application it was hosting.

From suspend to RAM using platter hard drives (F3s) my machine is ready to rock before my monitor wakes up

Yeah Windows 7's sleep is more advanced than any other Windows and takes seconds to wake.

If you're still on a HDD for your OS though get an SSD, OCZ vertex 120GB drives are currently £100 inc VAT at a certain retailer....take advantage of that kind of price and clone your HDD to one, you won't regret it ever and wonder why you didn't get an SSD earlier.

The £/GB ratio still doesn't grab me and using sleep negates most of the benefits of an SSD for me. Yes I KNOW they are snappier but my F3 RAID array is plenty quick for now :) I have a 64GB SSD in my laptop which is perfect for what I use it for, but even 120GB is far too small for my desktop uses

Multiple drives it man, if your OS drive tanks then all your data is on one drive and unless you keep backups, could be lost :p

Plus it's more organised having dedicated drives :D

252 days of uptime on a heavy-load workstation is just mental.

I was only thinking the other day I can't remember when the last time I had any issues let alone had to reinstal.

That's what the 4TB NAS in the loft is for! SSDs hardly have a blemish free reliability record so far. Like I said I'm sitting out for a few gens for DT use ;)

W8DP Restart

On the subject of restarts...

Does that mean the upcoming, Windows 8 will be force restarting after updates?

I just can't leave mine on for any great length of time, i find my installation of windows to just bloat and bloat. After about 2 weeks of uptime i even start to notice a dip in performance.

Come to think of it, last night my Windows system decided to reboot for updates.. all by itself, without any of my input.

I only leave my machine on overnight if I am downloading but other than that I shut down when it is not in use. I do a fresh install about every 18 months (give or take a bit) it's overdue for it atm.
