right my brother has a macbook and he is forever bragging about it. I have a self built gaming machine with 64bit vista and ubuntu aswell as ubuntu on my laptop now what i want to know is why are macs boot up so fast? why hasn't linux matched this? why doesn't windows cache files so it has the "sleep" effect by default. i now make my pc sleep when i go to bed (i understand this uses no power just as a regular shutdown does, now i am on vista within 10 seconds. ubuntu has a speedy boot up no doubt but its still no match to macs and really i want to know why?

Sleep uses power, hibernation doesn't. Generally i find sleep pretty much instant (as it gets), and hiberantion like a quick boot up in to an desktop environment i left behind.

Sounds like you're probably hibernating to begin with, think Visas does this by default?

set S3 power mode to active in the bios (probably on S1 now), it'll sleep (all power off) but keeps power in the ram, so it turns on instantly, this is what a mac does

100% will be possible, S3 has been available on motherboards for years now, since before 2000 even

ah kool what is the name of it in the bios and will it already be enabled?
also how does this affect the battery life of laptop/macs as i assumed this will drain the battery
also why dont windows do this?

it'll be under power options in the bios, probably the first option under there

if you're on a laptop it does drain the battery, but very slowly..
