Right I got my first random call for a PC support - HOORAH!!!

However it's a bugger of a call!

So need some advice.

Basically she has a Windows ME machine that a friend has possibly installe some viruses or spyware by accident.

What software is good for ME?

Also where can I download standalone version of Windows ME updates?

I imagine that you will be hard pressed to find anywhere that offers this. Windows ME is such a bad operating system that I doubt anyone would take the time to host update files for it.

If there on broadband you can also try using Bitdefender or Housecall.

Scans using a clean engine via the web.

ME is the evil stepchild of MS tho, you'll have nothing but pain and suffering with itl.

Try a bit of sales technique and inform the person that they really need to upgrade to XP. Or even upgrade to Windows 98.

Theres user made "service packs" for Windows 98, so i'm sure you could find all the ME updates available in a similar package if you did a bit of googling..

Yeah I know how bad ME is :(

Unfortunately from the chat on the phone I had with her, I think she is unlikely to want to buy XP as she said her friend was getting her a "copy" of sage too that she would like installing, unless I had a copy she could have....errrr no that's just wrong love :S

Guess I will have to have a good look round for ME updates :(

Why do you all hate M.E So much? LOL at some of the replies though!

it was released with massive bugs such as huge memory holes

that were never fixed

with an ME machine your free RAM will constantly run down, untill it eventually runs out. You're only option then is to reboot it

and there's no fix for it !

amongst other huge problems that were never fixed.

Perhaps you could have a look around for cheap used Win 2k licenses. 2k would be loads better and I reckon it'd be quite cheap as well. In addition I bet it would be more suited to her hardware than XP.

I'd be wary of this job... it sounds like she is the type of person to have an unlicensed OS; it is going to be a complete ball ache to get it running well, considering the OS was cack to start with - charge per hour... :)

Ah, I see. If it had such bad problems then why, 1. Did MS not fix them? 2. MS release the OS?

ME was a stop gap untill XP. it was just a badly re-hashed version of 98 brought out because XP was being delayed.

They never fixed them, as it was quickly "end of life"d and replaced with XP. Me has allways been the poor ******* offspring of the windows family. Microsoft tryed to forget it ever existed.

It's going to be difficult to get Windows Me updates, as Microsoft stopped supporting it along with Win98 in mid 2006; I suggest you do too.

i suggest you do so too. You wont ever fix the problems on this computer, merely just plug them up till it happens again. Direct her to this page, and explain if she wants to get a properly working computer, she should at least revert back to '98 if she's unwilling to spend money on her PC.
