Windows ME

Theres user made "service packs" for Windows 98, so i'm sure you could find all the ME updates available in a similar package if you did a bit of googling..

Windows 98SE was actually a great OS for the time. Windows ME was anything but. People still actually use windows 98. No-one in their right mind uses ME. Anyone who has the technical know how to maintain, host and distribute windows packs are just not going to bother with Windows ME - ever. It isn't worth the time, it isn't worth the effort, and it isn't worth the steam of my ****.

Microsoft have tried to delete Windows Me from history. Had to fix one machine with Millennium and when I installed Norton Antivirus 2002 (this was a few years ago :) ) Nothing! on reboot. Black screen,no bios screen, I had to shut down the pc to reload drivers then all was fine. I hope never to see Millennium again! :)

Tell her there is nothing you can do because she is 1) using an unsupported operating system which needs upgrading and 2) shes running an illegal operating system which you refuse to work on.

Tell her to install XP Home is the only way. It's only £50.

Yeah refusing to help people because of their OS is going to make me a millionaire....lol

Anyways got a call from her yesterday saying she had got sick and tired of the machine crashing and had gone and bought a brand new XP machine, but she still wanted me to come round and set it up and copy her files and programs accross.

WOOO HOOO!!!

Sweet, was there an hour and 20 mins and all sorted, she paid me and even gave me a bottle of wine :)

You know, it may be a hard decision, and cost you a little revenue in the short term, but you should consider whether its a smart move to build your new business whilst turning a blind eye to the legality of copying ripped off software.

Sure, the odd copy might not hurt anyone, and loads of this goes on, but once you are down that slope its only a short slip to more proactive distribution and before you know it you are being relied on to provide a ripped off copy of this and a ripped off copy of that.

Cleaning up your business later will lose you even more custom, and not doing so will eventually land you in court. Not much cop for a friendly family business?

Errr? what?

What do you think I did that was illegal?

It is a brand new PC she bought with Windows XP on it and then I loaded her files and software on :S

Sorry but you lost me here, I certainly would never do anything illegal on a clients machine it just isnt work the risk.

Sorry I have to disagree again, I have worked in IT support for 10 years, however most of my time now is spent on NT based systems, such as 2k, XP etc.

So I was asking which utils people were aware of that ran well with ME and where to get updates as I was having problems finding them on the web (turns out you can't get them from the web).

Good God man, this is supposed to be a forum for like minded people trying to HELP EACH OTHER.

If you don't have any advice than should you be posting I wonder?

To the OP, if you have any 95/98/ME customers in the future, I suppose its worth pointing out to them that MS don't support those older versions of Windows. They're very risky OS's to run these days. Basically no security.

Thanks guys.

I did say when I went round last night, that if she had kept the ME machine and not gone for XP (or other) that I would have had real problems with fixing the PC and would have advised her to upgrade anyways.
