the interweb? you mean the internet ?, what is your network design? is there a router or just modem or what. How is your network set up ?

Of course i mean the internet. I'll remember to use the correct terminology next time your around......anyway, back to my network. Its the most simple network you can imagine. 2 win XP-Pro machines (one lappy and one desktop) a crossover cable linking the two.

When i link them together it says "Limited or no connectivity" click the picture and see what i get when i try to repair the connection. I have tried using the winxp wizard and have tried setting the I.P's up using 192.168.0.1/2 etc.... but to no avail.

The laptop is connecting to the inter'net' via the desktop pc. This is connected to a USB ADSL modem.

Any idea's?

Cheers

When you set the IPs manually, did you set DNS IPs?

Limited or no connectivity just means the machine didn't get an answer from a DHCP server. Are you running ICS or bridging the interface on the laptop with another to the internet or what?

ok the box that is connecting to the internet via the USB modem (PC1) MUST be 192.168.0.1 or windows will have a hissy fit.
the other one (PC2) can be whatever you want, if you are going to set the IPs manualy then I sujest 192.168.0.2 for that, don't forget to check the subnet is set to 255.255.255.0 on both. set the default gateway to 192.168.0.1 on PC 2 and check all the other settings in advanced don't have somthing stupid there.
also check that your firewalls are setup correctly (forget what you need to check with XPs firewall as it sucks and I don't use it ever). it THAT doesn't work, check your cable, I had this issue and it was because someone had hovered over the cable with a dyson and it had eaten two of the wires away.

No, the IP addresses can be anything aslong as its in the same network, he can have it to any address he likes except 0.0.0.0 and 127.0.0.1 or any that ends in a 0 because they are network addresses thats already been used or that can't be used.

make sure you put the dns settings into the scheme too.

Heres alittle example of one setting

PC1
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: leave blank
DNS Primary: 212.23.3.100 [Zens DNS Servers]
DNS Secondary: 212.23.6.100 [Zens DNS Servers]

PC2
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 [This is because PC1 acts as a gateway]
DNS Primary: 212.23.3.100 [Zens DNS Servers]
DNS Secondary: 212.23.6.100 [Zens DNS Servers]

Hope this helps, the reason why your not gettin limited is it could be because of what your putting into the address correctly. Give it a go. PS don't use Zens DNS servers, if your not on Zen they won't work.

Who is your ISP? ....

eeeer i have no idea, it was a picture of the error message last nite...... I will have a play around tommorow and try some of the settings you guys have suggested. Just so you know the cable isnt at fault as the network works perfectly when i manually enter the I.P addresses (And i have tried another cable). When I do this however the laptop is unable to connect to the internet via my pc as the default gateway is incorrect (Blank). I tried setting the default gateway to 192.168.0.1 which at the time was the I.P addy for the main pc, I also tried changing it to my modems I.P. No luck on either. Ah well im off out on the lash now so will be in no state to fix it tonite. i'll be back tommorow with more questions no doubt.

cheers guys.

  I'm having the exact same problem, really starting to bug me now!!!! I've set up my network ok before, but this time it's having none of it. I can ping the PC's and my WAP, move files about, no problem. Can I get this thing to go on the net? No.

Tried everything, you know it's somthing soooo simple I can't see it :(

On the main PC do ipconfig /all. Check the DNS setting and enter that on the second pc manually.

Cheers but no joy there. I'm using a D Link DWL 2000AP+, by the way, if that helps :)

Give me the exact setup in words what your network is.

for example

PC > Router > Internet

you've got the subnet wrong on PC 2 btw

try setting PC2s PDNS to 192.168.0.1 (or watever you have a PC1s IP)

Thanks for the help sorted out now, the default gateway AND the PDNS needed to be 192.168.0.1  I'm sure I tried that about a million times (well at least a couple)

I said it was somthing simple, and it was, it was me :D
