had this a couple of times on my machine for some reason and I got it from the men in purple. in 2003 :S
used to be able to just phone them up and they would give you a new key I got about 4 authentic windows keys now but I only ever needed the one (I didnt know how to enter them lol!)
After installing some windows updates a few weeks ago i was greeted with messages telling windows wasn't "genuine" (so it's not a REAL copy of vista that you sent me then MS? ), and 2GB of ram disappeared too.
Much swearing and 2 angry reboots to 'make it fix itself' resulted in the return of the missing 2GB and the restoration of my "genuine" status.
I'll let them off with an update-related brief cockup though cos I've been enjoying vista 64
I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. This is apparently a known problem with Vista and MS have released a patch for it. Unfortunately I cant remember its name, but if you google it I am sure you can find out.
I made the exact same mistake, activated Vista before installing all the updates from Windows Update. Had to reinstall Vista again, mine is Vista Ultimate Retail (signature edition) got it for free from a mate who did a big PR event for MS.
The best way to avoid any activation problems is to install everything and use Vista for about 20 days then activate. (well this works for me).
I don't know how the normal Vista Ultimate box looks like but mine has a limited edition number at the front (I think 2500 copies were produced or something like that). Yes, it has his signature with a cheesy introduction of how great Vista is going to be Apart from that the software is the same, doesn't even say SE in System Info.
