I have a Licensing question and yes I did look in the Sticky but it didnt answer my question.

Do you have to renew server and cal licenses every year? if you do not plan on upgrading and do not want any of the pluses of upgrading?

This depends on what licencing scheme you're on. Some schemes are a hire agreement more than purchasing. How did you aquire the licences and do you know what agreement you have with MS?

I don't know of any agreement where you lose the licences if you stop paying. It simply means you have to pay for upgrades instead of being able to claim them as part of the agreement.

I think a Microsoft Campus agreement falls into that catagory.

An OEM license is attached to the motherboard of the system, either your server or desktop. If you change the motherboard you have to buy a new license to be legal.

CAL licenses can be purchased for either a device or user. In either case the license is attached to the device (PC) or user (User account).

I hate to be picky, but there's an important subtle mistake.

The OEM licence isn't attached to the motherboard, it's attached to the machine, of which the motherboard is an integral part. If you change the case which has the COA, then your also not licenced.
