Windows - the last simple thing you found out

one i use quite a lot: ctrl-shift-esc brings up the task manager. more reliable than ctrl-alt-del as sometimes that's not just the task manager, but an option menu. meh, i probably just use it because it's more l33t or something.

i use win-d quite a lot for minimising everything to the desktop too.

What was the last, simple thing someone showed you in Windows that you didn't know about? Can be anything you like, from some kind of feature, to simply a different, quicker way of doing something.

For me, it was being shown that holding down the shift key whilst opening a folder, toggles between filenames being on or off in thumbnail view.

Found that out today :D

Didn't think I'd ever post this in here. But I saw this the other day.

Except for that the only other thing I know that I can think of and hasn't been mentioned is the Windows key and L.

Logs you out and puts you at the welcome screen.

Ages old but i cant think of new stuff Ive learnt, so back to basics:

CTRL + C to copy something (text/file/whatever)
CTRL + V to paste whatever is in the clipboard, namely something youve just copied.

This can be quite useful on some web pages that dont allow right clicks etc, or gmail which doesnt seem to give the "paste" bit when you right click.

CTRL + S to save - simple, but sometimes the mouse will go, has saved a few peoples work at work when systems lock up but the foreground app is running OK.

You may think "I can just right click" for most of those I just listed, but once you get going with it its faster.

oh, WINDOWS + M minimises apps too.

Logs-you-out also? Because on mine it Locks the user/computer.

Useful because no one can do anything to my PC until I Unlock with username & password, even pressing power button will NOT respond :D

Anyone mention WinKey+R? :)

Windows + E = open my computer
Ctrl + Escape, open start menu.

A nice touch in word that I discovered not too long ago was - If you highlight some text and then hold ctrl, using page up and down increases and decreases its size :)

i don't know if it was the last think i found out about windows but the most useful thing i can thing of recently is the batch rename, highlight the files you want to rename and rename as normal, it will number them for you :)

nope. i forgot that one... another of my regularily used shortcuts.

i find it quicker to disable the windows firewall from the command line:

winkey+r "cmd" "netsh firewall set opmode disable"

obv replace disable with enable to turn it back on.

I've used windows for donkey's and only recently did someone tell me about the CTRL + Left Click for multiple selections and SHIFT + Left Click for list selections.

:o

This technicaly ISN'T a windows thing, it's a firefox thing, but can make your computing more efficient in the way I think that was intended by the member who started the thread: In firefox, hit f6, ctrl+l or alt+d to place the cursor in the address bar with the text fully selected. Enables you to just type in a new address, without having to use the mouse to get to the address bar.

Lovely :D
