Just curious on something I dont fully understand.

I have a large rig upstairs and plenty of HD Space,

Question though is about my laptop which only has 40GB Space HD.

Windows Update:

Right, There is a lot of stuff here it wants to download, only 2 months old this laptop with XP Home and sp2 insalled.

Do you always download everything M-soft says in the update or what ?

also, when it is all downloaded, I notice a lot of it is in Add / remove programs, do you keep it there ? just thinking as if m-soft keeps doing this, slowly my laptop will be full with just updates from them ?

Mainly on the updates it wants to install (about 15) are security updates / updates for windows xp

thank you

In general its good to update everything - in the Cntrol Panel Add remove programs you do have a check box right at the top to say "dont show updates" if yours like mine gets swamped with MS stuff

Unless you have alotttttt of stuff (other than windows) on the laptop , especially music or other media (which does tend to swallow hdd space) its unlikely you will use 40GB

Even with updates Windows usually only needs around 4-5 Gb max as a default install.

There's no way (Windows) updates could/can consume 40GB, or maybe I did not understand your post. Security updates are very important, I mean its Windows!

Personally I stopped using Windows Update & now use AutoPatcher (see here & here). Allows me to update multiple machines & I have the updates with me rather than online.

Yes I have CC on my Main Rig, I believe you unlick the Prefetch files on CC though if I remember correctly ?

As for hotfixes ? you mean you can delete them after they have been installed etc ? hotfix uninstallers (windows update temp files)

thanks

just stick to windows update and use ccleaner to remove temp files, it can also remove hotfix uninstallers (windows update temp files) look for it in the advanced options{snip}
I wouldn't recommend 'removing' hotfixs using CCleaner! Recently did that & I couldn't uninstall IE 7 Beta to try the RC1 version because it had removed the uninstaller :( Had to reformat my PC

you can remove that without using ccleaner, ccleaner is a great tool

ie7 is still beta/rc, hence the name
