So it's been 4 years since my last Windows machine and jumping back on the waggon.

I had a play early in the life time of Windows 8 and hated it, so as it stands what I used to use and use at work is Windows 7 but I'm not sure if things have changed with the newer versions. The system will be used mainly for gaming what operating system would you guys suggest for me?

Going to be personal choice here.
Windows 7 still viable for gaming. (see steam stats for OS useage break down).
Windows 8 has a free update to 8.1 and with a mod called powershell i think the name is, that makes the UI useable just...

My advice would be to wait until windows 10 comes out begining of 2015 and use windows 7 for now.

Depends if you're buying a licence or not. How much they are
and how the upgrades will work for Windows 10. All a bit of a gamble in that regard.

Windows 7 is fine. As is Windows 8.1, with start8 or whatever. Win 8.1 is just as usable when configured as win 7. I've found it quicker and more reliable. Not all have.

If you're buying a new license, Windows 8. If you don't like the start screen, add in a replacement such as Start8 (my preference) or Classic Shell.

I prefer windows 7 over 8 but then again you can make 8 look like 7 so its all good.

windows 10 is not far off release either so something worth considering as well.

use windows 10 preview, save your money for now. (there's usually a prerelease sale of windows? so you can get it for cheaper than the £75 being asked?)

If you're not comfortable using the Windows 10 preview, Windows 8.1 by far. I hardly ever see the start menu and I don't even have any of the third party replacements installed. Taskbar your most used apps, right click Windows icon for access to control panel etc, and you'll only use the menu to search once in a blue moon for a few seconds.

8.1 or 10 Preview. Although I do expect there to be a gap between the 10 preview expiring and 10 being released, which might leave you in a bit of a pickle.

Im ordering a system so I would like it pre loaded therefore I'm guessing Windows 10 is out of the question.

Just watched the Windows 8 video, the whole desktop view suits me and I like but it's the Xbox style setup it has that doesn't appeal therefore I'm thinking of going for Windows 7.

Is there any advantage for games using Windows 8?

Thanks for all your input guys, it's appreciated.

Theres little in it for gaming really, I know Windows 8 is said to be a bit better for Battlefield 4.

Personally, I wouldn't buy the older OS when you can easily modify Windows 8 to function like Windows 7 for free with a start menu replacement.

I also wouldn't want to run a preview version of Windows but it's very very easy to install Windows yourself, so I wouldn't rule out buying a system without a preloaded OS.

I have used windows 7 and 8.1 for gaming and I didn't notice any difference in it.

I am currently using windows 7 but shall be putting 8.1 on at some point but that's only because I can make it look like windows 7!

windows is easy to install, its just a matter of following the on screen info.

Don't worry about the start screen - you can easily, and safely, remove all apps from the start screen. After that, install StartIsBack+ and you'll soon forget that the start screen and it's tiles even exist.

I should add that I've found games more reliable with Windows 8.1. I have less problems with crashes and stability than with Windows 7.

I am dual booting windows 8.1 and 7. I use 8.1 for various things but I think it runs Battlefield 4 better than Windows 7. But I have also installed Windows 7 as I think some of my other programs run better on that OS.
Overall if I were to choose, it would be 8.1, but 7 would be very close behind. I already had Windows 7 and got Windows 8 at a very good price so it would have been rude not to dual boot;)

8 was a pain to use at first, now they've added a ton of tweaks to the GUI.

8.1 is a great OS. I use it without any mods or start menu replacements.

Get 8.1, especially if you're multi-monitor, then Windows 8.1 is a must.
