It looks like Windows Vista Service Pack 2 RTM and Windows Server 2008 RTM just made their ways out of Microsoft’s closed testing environment and into the homes of happy beta testers. According to company officials, channel partners and MSDN subscribers are now able to get their hands on these fresh new releases.

"Today we are announcing the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. SP2 represents the latest step in Microsoft’s commitment to continuous improvement. It includes all updates that have been delivered since SP1, as well as support for new types of hardware and emerging hardware standards."

Microsoft has mentioned that the key benefits of Vista SP2 include Windows Search 4.0 for improved searching performance, the ability to natively record data to Blu-ray in Windows Explorer, a Bluetooth feature pack to support the 2.1 specification (perhaps 3.0 as well?), more simplified Wi-Fi configuration with Windows Connect Now (WCN), and UTC time zone support in the exFAT file system.

The company has also stated that the SP1 Service Pack Blocker Tool is being removed today, as was announced back in January. Service Pack 1 will now be available in Windows Update, but we highly recommend skipping it and getting a download of Service Pack 2 when it is publicly made available.

FYI

anyone that uses vlite

I'd strongly suggest not installing a service pack on a lite install.

This is fine for the normal home user but pointless for the enthusiast. A lot of people seem to have transferred over to W7 RC1 already.

There are also those that haven't transferred over to Windows 7 Release Candidate like myself. So, no, Windows Vista Service Pack 2 isn't pointless.

Fire Wizard, have you tried the RC yet? I reckon you'll love it :)

It's going on my work machine this afternoon

This far from pointless.
There are relatively far fewer Win 7 users than there are Vista.
Anyone using Win 7 on a production machine is risking it (It may have dropped it's beta name but it is still not release code).

I'd still prefer a final release over a release candidate when it comes to the operating system.

Absolutely. However, as far as I'm concerned, W7 RC is stable enough and runs everything well enough for me to use it as my main OS.

This far from pointless.

I only said pointless for the enthusiast. Obviously running W7 on a production machine wouldn't be advisable. For someone such as myself, who only uses their PC for internet, music and gaming, there's little problem.

Win7 RC may be stable enough but far from perfect, personally I'm seriously thinking of staying with Vista until Win8 is out (due to no real benefits over Vista for my needs, and yes I'm using 7100 build,as usual Win7 is good but bit overhyped).

I would suggest testing W7 on a backup machine, or at least running it virtually. I've always been a supporter of Vista, but W7 is smoother, slimmer, easier to navigate and has some great functions. UAC control and Aero Snap alone sold it to me.

When I was running Vista I always had that red cross in the taskbar because UAC was off. I never used UAC Tweak, feeling I shouldn't have to download a third party application to combat a standard Windows security function.

Just seen your edit. Fair enough, but why do you feel its overhyped? I haven't seen any hype anywhere, just forum users and webzines saying it's a really strong operating system.

I'm running Win7 beta on backup machine already,as I said nothing new there I need, speed is the same too,UAC was never an issue for me.
I rather spend my money on hardware upgrade and wait for a real upgrade OS like Win8 rather then few tweaks here and there.
Only speed improvements I have seen is on old PCs(to be honest I would not run any new OS on old systems unless I had too).

Check other forums you'll see some people thinking Win7 is second coming or something, having used it for quite awhile and to be honest installation on 7000 build was a nightmare for me(never had any OS give me so much issues, fair enough its beta build ),7068 was better and 7100 is ok too installation wise but not enough of a difference for me to make it worth the upgrade money wise.

I do hope Microsoft stick to their new 3 year cycle that means Win8 should be here 2012.
IMHO XP to Win7 is worth it,Vista to Win7 only worth it if you got a slow PC or features in Win7 you really need.

Installing this when I get home, not yet installed 7100 W7 on main PC as my Vista64 is awesome, (netbook however has it) so will be nice to have SP2 on the main machine.
