Looking to buy some wine for a family member for her birthday but I haven’t a clue what to look for, now I can quite easily go into the local off licence and by a few bottles of the £4 stuff but I am looking for something a little more expensive, I have up to £50 for a single bottle/s so what do OcUK members recommend? And more importantly where do I buy? :p :D

Hmm next question - what foods does she like eating, or does she drink wine by itself?

Ahh well just wine by itself mainly, I can’t recall her drinking while having something to eat during the winter periods, although in summer she does but I can see this bottle will be drunk well before the summer! :D

I don’t know guys! :p Haven’t a clue, are Virgin wines any good? They seem to do a good selection.

Ok, some suggestions:

Dr Loosen Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett 2004/2006 - this is a juicy wine that can be drunk anytime and doesn't taste too heavy. My female ex-housemate wasn't a wine drinker, then I started showing her wines and this (the 2004) is her favourite wine. It's £12/bottle normally at Laithwaites.

Sancerre - agreed a good french wine.

Chablis is good too. Look for a Grand Cru as the region enforces the mark.

Chardonnay - french good, NZ etc are

Sauvignon Blanc - NZ good, french ok.

For me I tend to find french wines consistently age better. Altough new world is starting to catch up.

What ever you do don't spend £50 on one bottle, unless the recipient is into wine it will be totally wasted, stick to a max of 10-12 quid and buy three or four bottles. My sugestion would be go to a local wine merchant and ask them for recomendations.

Although I'm a red wine snob, I know nothing of white wine, and the above advice I wholeheartedly agree with. Much more sensible. :)

Yup this is a good suggestion.. once you get beyond "just buy them a bottle of white" it becomes a mine field. This suggestion would given them the opportunity to look at wines a little further up the scale.

Aye - go for the selection - for the NZ wines I might suggest:

Dashwood Sauvignon Blanc (pretty good)
The Ned Waihopai Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2007/08 (Awesome)
Craggy Range Old Renwick Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2008 (Awesome)
Isabel Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Marlborough, New Zealand (Awesome)

You also really need to find out what she likes - "White" wines can come in so many different flavours and types. I would suggest getting:

A good desert wine - my fave at the mo is this one
A riesling or Gewürztraminer
A sancerre as already suggested
A sparkling wine of some description

£50 quid on that lot would make me happy !
