Wing suit

One of hte things I will and want to do before I die or cause my death is to jump off a cliff with skis as per the first part of their jump, then land cut away the parachute as I get to the bottom of the slope with a beer waiting for me! :D One day... one day!

Did you have to a lot of sky diving before you moved onto base jumps?

Well the BPA state you need a minimum of 800 jump before you attempt a wing suit jump though in the States it's 500.

It is a completely different type of skill. You downward speed changes from an average of 110-140mph to around 60mph, though you can do a momentary stall of a mere 25mph!!

I had done over 400 jumps by the time I did my first BASE jump. However I have done a total over 507 jumps to date. Though it's been a few years since I've jumped as I haven't had the time recently. :(
 
Thats the most insane thing I have even seen, those guys must have a screw loose or something! There's no way I would get 100M near the end of that cliff, just watching it made me cringe.

Imagine being one of the car drivers on that road when they come swooping in like that. Lucky they didn't drive over the edge!

I've done a few skydives before and I know how you can learn to do it independently, but how the heck do you learn to base dive? I assume you can't have someone jumping with you and holding your arm like solo sky dive? Do you just jump and hope for the best?
 
That is absolutley crazy. Those guys are totally insane, but I can't begin to imagine how immense an experience that would be.

The yellow suited guy looked like a Mario bros. invincibility star. :D

The person in question had made thousands of jumps and was both a professional and an expert. They certainly weren't ignorant.

Jumping off a cliff has some degree of danger no matter how many times you've done it before. It's not only dangerous to ignorant people.

I wouldn't call it selfish there doing something they love doing, life is about living for what you love if there's danger in that then so be it.

You have to keep a log of your jumps and get them signed off by another qualified skydiver on the same load.

I never said it wasn't a dangerous sport - and yes base jumping is inherently more dangerous, but that's part of the thrill. My point wasn't particularly aimed at you, it was a general, "ignorance kills" comment that a lot of "expert" skydivers who think they know it all attempt things they haven't trained or researched sufficiently. If you have the skills you can minimise the dangers, no matter what sort of jump you do. :)

It depends on the course you do and where you do it. You can look up to close to £1500 for a full AFF course, or £140ish for the static line course, and then individual jumps and equipment hire probably total up to close to £1k anyway. Depending on how serious you are you can then spen thousands on equipment i.e. rig. suit, altimeter, helmet, gloves etc... Once you've done all the expensive bit, it does become quite a cheap hobby, bar the driving to the DZ or flights to the States or other destinations :p

You can't really "learn" to BASE you just have to a) research b) spend time observing it c) familiarise yourself with the kit (it's different to normal kit) d) find a good spot (i.e. as safe as possible) e) make sure you have impeccable canopy control f) have the balls to try it!

You can't do a jump with someone as there isn't enough time, depending on where you jump. I've had a 6-7s delay on the jumps I did, but that's deploying at less that 1300ft so literally less than 15s till I hit the ground hard! ;) You *can* jump with someone but not in terms of showing you what to do. You have to ensure you're clear of people when you deploy and be ready for evasive manoeuvres if you do a 180 on deployment.

It's bloody good fun, but don't be fooled, it's not as safe as skydiving.
