Winter 2023/24 - It's FREEZING!

BBC is saying we are going to have 3 flakes of snow at 8pm next Wednesday.

Difficult to take long range forecasts in any way seriously tbh. They've never been the same since the Michael Fish hurricane incident of 1987...
2 or 3 days is my planning Limit.

Unless there's consistent weather... Ie a big fat low or high sitting over the UK.
But normal. Conditions? Week max.

I only use met office youtube channel for my weather.

Bonus. One of the weather girls is a right hottie.

I usually go by the met office, unless I'm out for a weekend in a tent where I check several different forecasters and go with the best one. :p

BBC forecast now changing to light snow, though mostly sleet, around the 18th/19th with a slight decrease in the forecast temperatures - probably more realistic than most of the big models are projecting at the moment.

Once every decades? Never more like it it snowed for an hour last winter, it lasted a day or two and that was the first time its snowed in 10 years. Havn't seen an actual blizzard since the 90's. Its over as a weather event.
We had fairly decent snow (in terms of snowfall for the south anyway) in 2018, a few times, and I'm sure a few years before that, I have the pics. Not exactly feet, but 5 or 6 inches from memory when measured after a couple days of snow fall. That's quite a bit for the south haha.

These were a few from 01/03/2018

I wish I knew what was the root cause of it all. Seems madness. It's struggling to get above 16/17c last few days/nights and I got all rads blasting

Let's have a look at this upcoming winter shall we and into 2024!

@OP - I hope you know that I now personally blame you for the cold weather we are having.

If you had never made this thread, then we would not be having this cold weather right now.

I remember 2018 well, a foot of snow because I remember digging the car out at Alder Hey hospital to drive along the M62 which only had one lane open and that was bad enough.

Most likely appears to be close to seasonal averages no?
That's not what they said. Since the last few winters have been mild and wet. The example he gave was that the Mild % was around 25 to 30 in recent years, so this was a strong trend towards colder and drier than of recent years.

Takes way more than an hour to warm my house up on a morning. I have it on about 2 hours on morning, then set back to 18 for the day so it doesn't get too cold before evening heating kicks in.

What's your flow temp set to on the boiler?
Are the rads all hot at the top? No trapped air.

You can get a radiator brush and clean the fins out on the back, helps to get more air through and more heat transfer to air.

Edit: Sorry, I was replying to @Liquid_Entity there, nested reply..

The graphic literally shows the highest chance is of seasonal norms. So while compared to recent years the chance of colder weather is higher, its still an outsider.

That is an amazingly well. Insulated house!
Unless I'm reading it gets really cold when it's off

The seasonal norms is cold and dry. Mild and wet is not normal winter.
Give it a watch, they explain what the numbers mean.

I'm currently having the same issue, exposed floor boards throughout most of my Victorian semi, I dont think the radiators are not big enough to counter the cool air getting in. I am getting carpets fitted throughout the upstairs in an attmept to combat the cold. When its close to zero outside I can have the boiler running full beans for hours and the temp doesnt go above about 17°C. If your house isn't that well insulated you will need high BTU rads to dump enough heat into the rooms to get them warm. It is of course better to tackle it the other way round and insulate as best you can.
