Winter 2024/25 - Cold or Mild? Rain or Snow?

My fig tree, which has been indoors for the winter, is now starting new growth. It will go out on Thursday, when we head into double-digits for the first time. The grass will be ready for a cut soon, too, and the polytunnel will need a wash. Haven't started my chillis yet, either.

Yeah its getting to min 7 and max 12 from about Wed but dropping back to 4°C from next Monday so cold snaps still around.

I'll probably trim my grass if its dry at the weekend but my Pear tree is coming to life. Green buds about the sized of peas on them. A cold snap should be ok on it as its designed to be frost hardy (Concorde variety) as is the Apple tree (Red Falstaff) but the apple doesnt tend to come alive until late March.

Not really, as whenever it's warm(er), it's always ****** windy and wet too.
Yup exactly this. Was thinking ohhh I can enjoy a ride out on mtb without dressing like an Arctic explorer and can take the ear protector off. But nope gusts of up to 50 mph and 20+ Mph Southerly Wind.
So that’s a no good. Get terrible ear pain from the wind which then sets off a Migraine style headache. If it’s windy and above 20c it’s fine. But anything below that it hurts.

Skull cap that covers your ears.

Or have a turbo trainer on standby for carp weather, typically November to at least start of March here in Hampshire.

Been looking for something similar recently, something like a helmet liner is ideal if looking for something shaped to cover your ears and fleecy.

I have been doing some cycling in to work over the past few weeks. Granted i am not doing a full cycle, its more of a park and cycle, although its still 9km each way, its a tad cold but once you get on the bike its not too bad, you warm up

Its getting in to that mind state of rolling out of bed and getting on the bike. When its dark and cold looking, it feels less appealing, but its not as bad as i thought it would be

its not a big ride in so i cant really boast though. And it cuts out a lot of start stop traffic.

Much rather have this with at least the chance of seeing some sun, than the absolute rubbish we've had for the last couple of weeks. It's been so depressing of late, low cloud, cold, no real wind, and certainly no sunshine.

Yep, definitely lifted my mood this morning seeing the sun for a change.

Yeh today has been nice, but it's still cold. It's not got to the 'warm, wet and windy' bit yet. Thursday I think that's meant to hit.

Too soon one frost and it'll get hammered fig trees are perfectly hardy put it under glass if you want early figs but indoors is too warm they're not tropical plants unless its an indian fig tree (ficus benjamina) that is a house plant and still too early to go outside...
Today's been lovely. First day it's felt like spring is coming.
Sunny weekend as well as today in a freezing cold, winter's day kind of way.

This is Ficus carica, variety Brown Turkey. It doesn't go into a living area, just in the unheated sun room to avoid the hard frosts. Will only be a minor frost now, so it can go outside. Been fine for the last three years on this regime.

Still got a 3c wind chill here. Meant to warm up over the next few days, but mucho rain forecast. Looking like more 50mph winds at the weekend too.

Yeah have wear one but then I end up too hot.
I just go for a walk now when weathers crap. Use it for a bit of trail exploring.
