Wipe Hard Drives

Just reinstalled vista on a used hard drive that I formatted using vista but vista only took about 2 minutes to reformat it completly which doesn't feel right, I don't know. Hard drives aren't something I know much about.

Is there a better way/program to completely clean my hard drives for a fresh install?

Plus any recommendations for installing vista?

Vista just erased the FAT part of the drive, from your perspective it's good enough to do the job as there's no need to go and erase the whole drive. it'll just get overwritten as and when

In short, leave it.

As said by feriso this is fine, if you want to sell the drive and want all the data to be gone you need to write every block on the drive with '0' and '1' which takes much longer.
