I am wanting to change some of my wireless connections to wired. One for my PS3 and the other for future tv. My router is upstairs next to pc, wired connection. My ps3 and tv are downstairs.

What would i need to run 2 cables from upstairs to downstairs? Also would need 2 (Think they call them wallpates) for the patch cables to plug into.

need to know...

what type of cable
Connectors
Special tools (If any needed)

Thank for the link:)

Don't really want ot use Powerline plugs. Have too many plugs in downstairs already, also would need 2 for the 2 connections needed downstairs.

If you want to have the connections faceplate to faceplate then you want solid core cable (Cat5e should be adequate).

If you just want cables with plugs on both ends then use stranded cable.

The tools required will be a Krone type IDC punch down tool and/or a crimp tool for RJ45 plugs.

You don’t strictly speaking need to install two cables. You could just use one and hang a network switch off the end of it. The same applies if you wanted to use Powerline adapters.

For the pedants: I’m aware that RJ45 refers to the complete cable not the plugs on their own.

Is there just 1 type of this cable? Also what is Cat6 cable?

Would this give me 2 connections available at the same time?

Cat5e is Cat5e. It comes in stranded and solid core versions, choose the correct type for your application as per my earlier reply.

Make sure you don't get Cat5 (without the e).

Cat6 is higher rated cable. You almost certainly don't need it for intended use.

If you connect a switch you can have many simultaneous connections as the switch will allow (minus the one that'll be going upstairs).

Thanks again for the info. :)

You mention stranded if using plugs. If i am just going to connect it to the face plates would it be the same (stranded)?

If you want to use faceplates you will need

2 x faceplates and back boxes (will be called RJ45 or Cat5e boxes on most sites) for each connection you want - one at each end.
A run of solid core cat5e cable (enough for the lengths you need).
A Krone Punchdown tool - cheap metal ones can be had for about a fiver if you are not planning to use it professionally this should be more than adequate for you.

Then a website showing you how to connect them - I always show this site to newbies at work - http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/ethernetcables.html

Depending on how you are running it you may also want some trunking to hide the cables in, something like - http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wc...&c_1=1|category_root|Home+Electrical|16849273

Thanks for that info pepp77 making it easier for me to understand:)

I am going to need 2 connections and not really wanting to use a switch, so will i need 2 runs or still just the 1? I will be getting 2 x double faceplates 1 for each end.

You will need a length of cable for each socket you want, so if you want two sockets you will need two lengths of cable.

Thanks bremen

Think i have found all the bits now. Just the cable was finding the best length for the best price. The 1 i posted was About £12 is that about the right price?

Need a little more help with the wires please.

I have been looking fot the cable that will go from the wallplate to the pc,ps3 and the 1 that will go from the router to the wallplate.

There seems to be a few different types..

Straight
patch
crossover

I don't know if these are all different types of cable or which type i need. Can someone help?
