Hello people, any ideas on this?

On Sunday afternoon our downstairs WAP (wired to the upstairs draytek 2860n router via external wiring)and skybox stopped getting an Internet connection. The skybox is connected to the WAP via ethernet cable as they sit next to each other.

I naturally thought the WAP had simply died so swapped it with a spare home hub but this did the same thing. The next thing I tested was the wiring and all patch cables with a cable tester and they were all fine.

Moving upstairs and connecting to the wifi is fine, over 5ghz the dl/ul speeds are 72/19 which is bang on what the draytek is reporting.

With the cables testing ok, I plugged the skybox directly into the switch and then the router and still it cant connect to the Internet.

My next thought was dhcp which is run from the draytek but everything is reporting the correct ip, even manually assigned ip's on wired systems cant get see the Internet.

LAN wise everything works, I can stream to everything and copy files across wired networks, the wifi network can see everything that is wired and see the Internet. Meanwhile everything wired works on LAN but not WAN.

As a final test I plugged the home hub directly into the router, changed the ssid and connected to this test wifi connection, from this i can see everything on the LAN but can not get the Internet because its final connection is a cable to the draytek.

Just to add, nothing is running W10

Help me I'm going insane.

Can you delete the lan network adapter from device manager, reboot then test again?
Plenty of these problems surfacing this past week and a bit.

Hi brendy, can on the pc's, the skybox and nas would be an issue as its basically every wired device.

Hi brendy, can on the pc's, the skybox and nas would be an issue as its basically every wired device.

In that case, Id power it all down, turn on the comms kit then one of the pcs, get one working (dhcp/static, whatever makes it work) then power it off, test the next, rinse and repeat until you can then power them all on and work.

**Update**

This morning I was able to turn one of the PC's on (they are in my old office, now nursery) and my PC is actually fine, iponfig /all gives;

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Which was as expected.

Plugging the old WAP directly into the draytek with a new SSID works fine so I was left thinking that both external cables have failed at the same time.

Losing the will to live I then moved the WAP back down stairs and plugged it back in to the face place and it works fine, plugging the sky box into it also works fine. :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

The only difference as it stands between now and Sunday is;

  • Different SSID
  • Different patch cable between WAP and faceplate
  • Different patch cable between Sky and WAP

Nothing else has changed at all and I really don't know what is going on with the NAS although its hard to know if it can see the internet anyway as all I have to go on is updating apps which wont update. This might be because the NAS software needs updating and the updated apps wont run on the old OS thus wont download.

I'm really at a loss though as to whats going on unless one of the replaced patch cables was faulty even though they all tested ok.

Just to close this off im tentatively confident that the new firmware ive just put on and a full factory reset has fixed this.
