Any difference technically that would mean wired is better/faster/lower ping than wireless?

Context being Xbox live.

I can't help thinking that wired is a much better connection for gaming?

Thanks

I've played competitive games on my PC over wireless for years, no problems with pings, in fact it's almost always around the same as my friends who used wired.

If you're worried about wireless giving you lag, start using wired controllers too :p

Was just a topic brought up in discussion.

Good point on the controllers though

Conventional wisdom says wired>wireless. My Xbox + PS3 are both wired, but that's easy cos they both sit within about 5 feet of the router. If they were in a different room it might be different.

id prefer to go wired for my xbox360 but havent had any issues at all with lag (apart from the odd occasion) using the Microsoft wireless adaptor.

I've had my 360, pc and laptops on wireless since day 1 and it's never been a problem at all. There's nothing like being able to do some work in the back garden on a recliner on a sunny day :D

My only concern was that when we bought some wireless phones it might interfere, but it didnt make a difference at all.

The microwave does interfere with my connection a bit actually, but unless your microwave is right between/next to either your PC/360 and your router that shouldn't be a problem :D

i went wired cos i refused to be ripped off into paying £60 for a wireless adapter that is generic and is usually given away free with most routers, or can be bought for around a tenner and manufactured for a few pence, but because m$ decided to make only their brand work then u get the shaft, asking for another fine if you ask me... forcing us to use their hardware.

It's not like they force you to pay anything, you can use a wireless bridge.

Using Wired here, Tempted to use wireless, cos I have a Cat5 cable hidden around the outer side of the room, Under that carpet/skirting.

That said, That's the cable going to the PC. My Router has a little metre long cat going into the 360, PC priority is second in the flat now. :p

I'm more thinking of reasons why they could be different rather than actual experience.

Cheers

There should be no real difference as long as you have a decent wireless connection. Over the years I've used both for PC and console gaming.

Where is the lag coming from?

As long as your wireless connection maintains a steady connection rate greater than your maximum download/upload speed then surely the only lag would be either server-side lag or saturation of your up/downstream bandwidth.

Can't understand why people can't understand this?

Well with wireless you are prone for any interfering signals to cause bit errors in transmission which you wont get with a wired connection. As said before, if you have a leaky microwave oven they that could cause interference as it runs at 2.45GHz with shed loads of power where as your wireless network will be running at 2.4GHz and running at 20dBm I doubt they even get close to 1 watt (30dBm). If the electronics has good selective filtering it shouldnt be a problem.
