Our flat was previously using O2 broadband with there supplied router and we never really experience any problems with the wireless. However, since we changed ISP together with a new Netgear router we are experiencing a lot of trouble trying to connect to the router.

There are 5 people in the flat and we all experience the following problems:

Laptops (Windows) - Just point blank refuses to connect to the router, its on the wireless list but doesnt connect.

Netbooks (Windows) - Connects fine but after 10 minutes we get disconnected

Computers (Windows) - Connects fine but after 10 minutes we get disconnected

Laptop (MAC) - Connects fine without any issues.

Anybody with any clue as to why we are experiencing sooo many problems? I believe the security on the router is running WPA.

:mad::mad:

do you get the disconnects when no security is in place?

is it searching for an IP when disconnecting?

i have had this issue twifce beforte and both times it was the router - just unable to deliver an IP.

No idea, it just disconnects us and then Windows will not connect to it again! How did you resolve your problem in the end?

i dont know - maybe it has a static IP?? have you checked?

its not going to be ALL the windows based PC's is it.

Why dont you just give each PC o n the network a static IP and see if that resolves the issue.

you havent brought enough information to the forum really - if, after you have removed the encryption the problem resolves itself then I suggest going to WEP encryption.

The mac may simply be better more up to date as i dont know what version of windows you have or what wireless cards you have.

If thats the case how come my flat mates Mac can easily connect to the router ?

It might be a windows issue, try another OS like a Linux or BSD. I found this in another post I had similar, on Power Saver mode it set the wireless card to minimum performance, this would lead to it either failing to connect or dropping often. Setting this to max performance gave a steady connection.

I would also just make sure drivers are up to date, always helps though shouldn't be the problem here. Case i had was I could connect to my access point fine but would fail to connect to my friends one at all until drivers were updated.

Found this on another forum My wireless problem was fixed when I loaded the first set of patches and hotfixes that were unofficially released, (when was that I think arround September).

I cannot tell you what patch or hot fix fixed it, and on checking I have now loaded some 50 patches for my 64 bit system (gee SP1 is already needed badly). Somewhere in there the fix is located. My wireless is now nice and stable, and all I can suggest is LOAD THOSE UPDATES that are floating about.

They do fix a wealth of minor problems, including wireless.

Is it just wireless or wired drop to? If it happens on wired also, it is something about how Win7 handles IPv6, I know this sounds stupid, but is your router Win7 compatible? I had a list of routers, but it is gone now. I can't locate it on google, it is online though.

You may be getting interference from neighbours' wifi. Run InSSIDer on one of the laptops and test at each existing location. The Mac may simply be in a part of the building where it can't hear other signals or ironically it's antennas might not be as sensitive as the other machines.

If it is intererence, the graph you obtain will indicate which channel is least used and you can set your router to.
