I'm looking at a wireless keyboard/mouse package. I see some advertised as 2.4Ghz - what is this, should I care ? Currently in my house I have the usual Wireless Virgin router, and a wireless phone setup.

2.4 ghz is the frequency the keyboard is working at. Its the same used by mobile phones, wireless doorbell ringers etc. It's pretty much the standard oh and btw it wont interfere with anything so you've got no worries.

Whats the range like on these 2.4ghz ones?
My HTPC in my lounge currently has a lousy MS wireless KB & Mouse... Doesnt work over about 6ft... I will 10-12ft...

The range depends it might start to flutter out after 15 feet, which is about 3 meters.

EDIT: Its affectevely blue-tooth technology so the range is only short.

Thanks, that clears things up.

mmm, wont interfere - mine does, I have a video sender near my HTPC, when its on the keyboard is very intermittent, switch it off and all fine.

bluetooth is bluetooth. the only similarity is the working frequency. normal 2.4ghz RF devices use one set frequency, bluetooth's major difference is that it frequency-hops to 78 other frequencies in close proximity up to 1600 times a second. if you read the blurb, this aids data integrity.

MS sets are, in my experiance, awful. Consistantly the worst wireless performers. If youve got a lot of equipement in the room, or a wireless network in close proximity, you may will have problems with any RF wireless keyboards (and mice). bluetooth sets are better in this respect though they are far from bullet proof as they still operate in the same 2.4ghz range as wireless networks. i have a logitech s510 set and a dinovo set (for laptop so not bluetooth) and they both suffer from interference, hence my intention to move to a bluetooth set in the near future.

Microwaves can cause problems with 2.4ghz devices as far as I know. The main combination to avoid is a wireless router at 2.4ghz and a 2.4ghz wireless video sender, the sort of thing that lets you play video from your pc to a tv in another room without cables. These two won't get on well.

I wouldn't expect it to be a problem with a wireless keyboard, though equally I would expect microsoft keyboards and mice to give problems under almost any circumstances. I'd be happy with a 2.4ghz logitech set, but will probably also use bluetooth when I get around to losing the cables
