Wireless Network File Transfer Speed

I've recently bought a new laptop which I've installed the RC version of Windows 7 on and I've just set up file sharing between my laptop and my Intel iMac which all seems to work fine but I'm a little concerned about the file transfer speed between the two.

My wireless router is G which, as I understand it, should transfer at 54Mb/s which equates to 6.75MB/s. Now, I know that this is an absolute max and I shouldn't expect to hit that mark but at the moment I'm transferring at around 150KB/s which is insane.

I'm trying to copy a 4gb file between the two and it reckons it's going to take around 10 hours.

Does anyone have any idea why this could be?

Both devices are wireless G aren't they?
How far apart are they, and from the router? Does it get any better if you move them all closer?
What channel is the wireless using, are there any other networks using the same channel nearby?

I would expect to get 1MB/s+ but thats hardly a sure thing. So much can interfere.

All three devices (laptop, iMac and router) are in the same living room about 6 meters apart. I'm using channel 13. There's only one other wireless network nearby but I'm not sure which channel it's using.

Thats not great at all. If they are all in line of sight, there shouldn't be a problem. Can you check to see what speed they are connecting at?

Does the speed differ if you are transferring from the laptop to the iMac or vis versa?

Try turning off any AV on all pc's and try again. Sometimes as the sending pc and the receiving pc both scan for virus it can delay it being sent which may mean packet loss which then has to be resent

Can you try using a cable between the iMac and the router to test if that helps the speed or not? I'm thinking something can't be playing nice, and only having 2 devices might might help to narrow it down.
