Hi all,

I've moved round to the gf's house now but router ports are all taken up and no room at the inn to use wired connections.

1) Try and use my old router as a switch (no idea how though) DG834N

2) Buy http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-001-TP&tool=3 TP-Link 300Mbps

But I've never used wireless for gaming etc does it preform better than wired these days? & also i'm on the same level as the router so should see full signal
1 door away

gf's router is a DGN2000 which i know is quite poor.

Hhmz :P cheers for that..lol

By gaming i mean lotro , TF2 etc. I know its all about latency (ping) etc

So my best bet is a switch then? or try and make my old router a switch if i can

If your a TF2 player why would you EVER consider wireless? Just no, make up a big cable and run it down to the router, run it through the carpet and walls etc if you have to.

If you turn off DHCP on the DG834N you should be able to use it as a switch, at least that's what I hear of most modem/routers. You may need to configure it's WAN

For £8 you could get a 100 megabit desktop switch, double that and you could get a 1 gigabit switch.

I wouldn't go wireless for gaming unless it was absolutely necessary. Home plugs are quite dependant on good wiring so might not be much better than wireless.

Go ethernet if you can.

While ethernet is better for gaming, if you have a half decent setup these days gaming on wireless to a cable/ADSL router isn't that bad - I get a pretty constant 3ms ping to router on my laptop with very little drop out or fluctuation. I'd still rather use wired but its perfectly playable. Now if we were talking a wireless dongle/tethering 3G/HSDPA it would be a totally different story.

@tlrBeta
^ Already have a cable connected to the gf's computer but as i want to move mine next to it somehow Ethernet cables are lacking & ports are full on router.
I was going to use my old router as a switch and just use that.

Well the wireless is 300mbps http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-001-TP

and im 17ft away from the router.

But the homeplug looks the way forward i feel but have no idea how to test if the electric is pure?!

Other than that the £8 switch seems good :P

yes, you can use your old router as a switch, just disable wireless and dhcp on it and only use the LAN ports. Alternatively just buy a 10/100 switch, they are inexpensive and you can get more ports. Paying a little more for Gigabit won't make any difference to you gaming pings, but is useful if you want to transfer a lot of data between devices in the house.

Thanks all :)

Going to try and use the router as a switch first & i did want to try and use the router as a wireless repeater too. But have no idea if that will work or how to do it :P

Morning all,

My previous predicament has been solved :P - just getting a switch.

So now..

i shall be setting up a wireless bridge but i've never done this before.

DGN2000 (main internet connection) i've set WDS to multipoint so that the DGN2000 is the master and then added my DG834N as a peon to repeat from.

Q. Do i need to have the same internet settings on the DG834N? Login etc?

No, the WAN settings won't make any difference. Just make sure that DHCP is turned off and you give the DG834 a static address that isn't in the dhcp pool on the dgn2000 - set the dchp pool to something like 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.200, and then you can give the dg834 an address like 192.168.0.10 that won't conflict.

Wireless wise, since the dg834n has a wired connection back to the dgn2000, I'd set it up as an AP rather than a wireless repeater - just set up the wireless with the same SSID and password settings as your dg834n, and choose channels that are at least 3 away from each other to avoid interference (i.e 6 and 9).
Otherwise your wireless traffic on the 834 side of the house has to make two wireless hops, incurring extra latency and halving throughput (which at "2 bars" isn't going to be great to begin with between the two netgears)

Well i can't seem to get this to work at all.

I've done what Zarf said but every time i go to change the router IP 192.168.0.(number) the router crashes and i have to manufacture reset :/
At one point i had the router at 192.168.0.99 but it then wouldn't let me login

& i disabled the dhcp

and set the pool as Zarf said.

Having tried them all; when wired isn't an option; providing you get a stable signal I find homeplug FAR better than wireless.

Typically pings of 1-5ms to the router, compared to wireless which can be sporadic at best.

May be a dumbass question but have you considered grabbing a port on the router for yourself and evicting another device onto wireless? Anyone that isn't gaming probably won't notice the difference.
