would i really have to make sure i have a good conroe or a very fast proccessor to make the most out of a 8800? or would a decent AMD be ok?

If you already have a decent amd it will be fine.

If you end up being cpu limited, then youre not playing with high enough settings

well i mean something not great, like a 3800.

Thatl be fine, clock it up to about 2.5 and you sorted, that said, if you are buying new, a c2d would be the best option.

Given your choice of card id say budget isnt too much of an issue, but if it is, a x2 will be fine.

Like i said, you wond be limited by the cpu if you play at decent settings with aa af

i havent got a that big budget, just got a little bit after i get a refund on my 360, and its a GTS which im not sure is worth getting yet.

I would consider going core 2 duo.

the e6300 is an excellent little CPU that doesn't cost much and clocks extremely well. The things you will be paying for are the other components...DDR2 and the mobo.

Just scout out all your options and come up with several different configurations and price lists before you make the final purchase. :)

my current computer is a pentium 4 2.66ghz, 512mb ram and a geforce 4 mx, building my own after xmas because my current one is complete crap.

do you think this would be a waste of money for gaming?

8800GTS
2gb 6400 800mhz ram
AMD athlon 64 3800+ 2.4ghz?

i really think th e proccessor would completely bottleneck the system

A P4 2.6 isnt that bad is it? Its not amazing but would that really be a huge bottle neck with a decent gpu?

I say pay the extra £50 for the 6300 instead of the 3800 (going by prices from this site). Not only will it wipe the floor with the 3800 and overclock better, it's a dual core so it's that little bit more futureproof.
