with an 8800 do you need a good proccessor?

another vote for the e6300. Don't get me wrong, AMD chips are great (i'm running one now)...but if you are building a new system I just don't think it makes any sense to go with a company that doesn't offer the best for the money.

i was reading something on tom's hardware about needing the fastest cpu for the 8800 ....they used the extreme c2duo ....im sure a 6300 clocked to over 3ghz would do though but id forget an athlon!

I say pay the extra £50 for the 6300 instead of the 3800 (going by prices from this site). Not only will it wipe the floor with the 3800 and overclock better, it's a dual core so it's that little bit more futureproof.

Was going to make a rude remark but Im hoping the Op was meaning a 3800 X2

I would heartily agree with the C2D though - unless you really cant afford the mobo prices

mobo prices :S

asus p5b vanilla, tht does a conroe, its quite cheap i fink on ocuk its about 100

i just wish i had gone with a c2d e6300 instead of this electric heater lol

I had a x6800 in my pc with the 8800gtx but i sold it on the MM and now run a E6400 and i havnt noticed any change TBH.

I know there are cheap ones around (not as cheap as the £40 amd ones though) - however the majority on here (incl myslef) go for the more expensive mobo's for reliability from a big brand and decent clocking results, the cheaper the mobo it might be less widely tested

That's the 3rd time I've seen this today, and now I just can't help asking...

...what is the "MM"?

:D

Where's that then? Do I have to be logged onto my OcUK shopping account to see it?

Same as me mate, you don't have enough posts to see it. Think it's 250 now, when I first joined it was 100.

Anyone who can budget for an 8800GTX, should budget for a similarly priced CPU. There's no point having a massive engine with a crappy gearbox.

However, 8800GTX's are the exception, since they provide DX10, so I would upgrade even if I couldn't get a better processor, just to be able to play new DX10 games coming in the new year.

Me personally though, I got an 8800GTX, 4GB DDR2-1066, and a Core 2 Quadro QX6700 EE on the way, with a 2nd 8800GTX coming in the new year, so I'm set either way ;) Heeeell yeah :D

MM = Members Market, a section of the forum for only privileged members of the forum who have over a certain amount of posts hehe.

edit: ohhh that was page 1, whoops.
