Without Remorse - 2021 Film - Michael B Jordan in "re-imagining" of Tom Clancy's Book.

Watched this yesterday, it's a film I've been asking for for ages (see https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/books-without-films.17642860/#post-8397353 ). Film adaptations of books, especially those as plot-ridden as Clancy's are invariably a downgrade, but this was particularly poor. Despite cutting out huge chunks, conflating some characters etc at least the older films seemed to make some sort of attempt to base themselves around a truncated version of the original plot. But if you took this film and renamed both it and the characters, you wouldn't even associate it with the book.

In fact, reading what I wrote 15 years ago, it's even more annoying because it reminds me that of all the Clancy books, Without Remorse is arguably the MOST suitable to be a film in terms of being able to maintain focus on a central characters without crucifying the story. They really, really need to consider making a TV series of his books because you can cover a lot more in say 8-16hrs than you can in 2hrs.

Even if I put aside my preconceptions as a Clancy fan, and judge the film on merit, I thought it was pretty meh. I didn't really build much affinity for the 'good guys' (one of the team dies I think? but I literally can't remember his name), I didn't particularly hate the 'bad guys', the plot was underdeveloped (seemed to be some cliche political sabre rattling used as an excuse for outlandish events). It's got some reasonable action sequences, but the same can be said for a lot of films.

As mentioned on it's release.........................

what kind of dribbling idiot thinks that buying the rights to a multi-million best selling book but then gutting it of everything that made it sell millions and just cut/pasting the name/characters into a bland generic "film by numbers" action film is a great idea that will generate hundreds of millions for their company?

:D

The problem is it doesn't matter how **** the reviews are, you can't help yourself with things like this. It's one of, if not the best books I've ever read so you kind of have to watch it if nothing else so you can post on the internet about what a pile it is :)
