Wolfdale Ramblings. . .

Jesus I hadn't noticed the £30 price hike on the 8400 thanks for pointing that out.

I guess because they are so scarce that is what they can get away with charging and half of the people here will STILL buy it.

Makes the quads not that much more expensive though.

Still if your a gamer you probably want the wolfdale for higher default clock and less cores. Probably easier to overclock to higher levels. I have a Quad right now and am seriously thinking of stepping down to a higher clocked dualie for that reason. I don't use 2 cores.... why do I need 4?

Good luck to 'em they are running a business. Peeps will always vote with their feet - im sure they know what they are doing.

Back to the previous discussion, the E2160 doesnt really hold much interest. Surely you have to compare like for like. A stock E8400 is going to be better than a stock E2160. And if you overclock them both then the same will still be true.

I'm going for a E8400 because the silent pc guys have had great results with running these passively (if you are married and have a pc in the living room silence suddenly becomes an issue lol!!). For £130 (or whatever you chose to pay) it's a good performance per buck chip and that suits many. Mix in some large silent fans and a passive cooler and its all good. Of course those that chose to throw a gale force wind at the cpu and ramp up the volts will get better results than the E2160 (I guess?).

For a non-overclocker it seems an easy choice but am always keen to hear both sides of these debates before handing over my hard earned!

Lack of stock has certainly stopped a few peeps jumping in quickly :D!

Why does there need to be a price cut? Intel has no competition, these new cpu's are flying out of the door regardless of price. Dropping their prices would be a ludicrous thing to do from a business point of view.

not sure if this is ocuk or intels fault but the BIG mistake they made was releasing them at £140 and then raising prices, if they brought them out at £164 to start with then nobody would complain they would just accept that they are still lower then their conroe equiv' :( im put off now that i have been 'shown' that these cpu's can be sold for more then £20 less but they choose not to  i think we the consumer should stage a 'no-buy' protest against the wolfdales until prices are dropped back to £140, but i know that will never happen :(

Well I got 2 E8400's, saw them at a price too good to miss and grabbed them before it was too late. The intention was to keep the best one and sell the other for at least what I payed for it. They both seem to be just about identical, reaching 3.6 at stock volts (1.18 in windows), 4.00 at 1.325-1.35v, and 4.45 at 1.45v. I daren't try more than 1.45v since some people have seen their chips degraded after only a few days or even fail, so for me, till people have been using these chips a bit longer think I will just stick to 3.6 and 1.18v as at that speed its much faster than an E4500 at 3.2.

My E8500 has sat at 4.2 gig since i got it. Everythink appears fine, apart from weird temp readings. I had a chat with the said chip, and it wasnt complaining about degredation :D

What volts though, actually over at XS a lot of people had found that they could run at 4.5G with say 1.45v and after a few days they needed 1.5v for the same clock. I would love to just slap it up to 4.4 at 1.45v and leave it at that but I'm too chicken.:(

I find it interesting what you say there 'before its too late' almost as if the Wolfdales are limited edition and if you don't snag one they will disappear from the face of the planet forever!

I've had a wolfie in the old shopping basket a couple of times myself thinking along the same lines but then I realise thats the hyperbole at work!

I think the nVidia 8800Gt launch was very similar, in envoked a sense of 'panic' buying amoungst the consumer.

I wonder if had there been plenty of stock of the E8400 would you have still bought two?
