I read some woman is sueing her council due to hitting a pothole on her illegal scooter and damaging it and herself.

Not sure if she will get anything.

What are your views on these devices? Really handy for popping down the shops? Or a bane of human existence and a menace on the roads to cars and pedestrians alike? Mostly they are not legal unless you have a certain type but I haven't looked too closely into it as I have no plans to get one.

Personally I don't like them as a car driver.
This is mainly due to most people around here
A) not having any lights/PPE
B) come cutting across cars and people with no regard for anyone

You get the odd **** cyclist but I'd say half of the scooter riders round here do whatever they like.

But in principle I think they would be OK work same rules applied as on a bike.
They do not belong on pavements!

There's a scheme in Birmingham too. They are often strewn all over the pavements.

But in principle I don't see how its any different from a bike or e-bike.

If you're travelling on one and don't see the pothole then either you were going way too fast or your eyesight isn't up to the job of riding safely.

Personally I'd have them all crushed. Round here (Ellesmere Port) I can guarantee the rider is either an utter bell end or a drug mule (or both).

They're legal in Chester unfortunately :( https://www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/news/electric-scooter-trial-in-chester-extended-until-2024

Thought only the hire ones were legal?

I think they are great and should be the only thing allowed in city centres.. would be ideal for their eco push.

Make drivers use park and rides (I am a driver myself)
Except for the number of idiots who are using them, and for the people that for example need to use a car due to disability and for whom park and ride with a two wheel scooter is not a thing.

I loathe those two wheel scooters as the illegal ones tend to be ridden by brain donors going far too fast for the pavement (I had one whiz off the pavement and keep up with me doing 15mph in the car), and moving around on the road without any awareness of other traffic or the basics of road safety.
The legal ones seem to just get dumped in the middle of paths wherever the person using it has decided to get off.

As for the original question i'm not sure, on the one hand the council have a legal obligation to maintain the roads to a safe standard BUT at the same time that standard is for vehicles that themselves meet certain requirements and are designed to work safely within the standards for the road and I'm fairly sure most of the electric scooters I've seen whizzing around illegally don't meet those (besides the obvious such as lighting, the wheels are usually far smaller than any road legal vehicle).
As my dad put it, he wouldn't have touched the electric scooters he's seen, because he used mopeds/petrol scooters, motorbikes (with and without sidecar) and trikes when he was young and knows how hard it is to drive them safely with small wheels, the the wheels on the electric scooters he's seen seem even smaller (I've seen them with wheels smaller than my mum's old 4mph mobility scooter that was only rated for pavement use).

Scooters are fine. Its people that ruin them.

The first time I ever encountered one was early 2000s. I saw Chris Ewbanks zipping along the seafront and I over took him in my Mondeo. Since then they have increased massively.

I used to bump into him all the time at one point.

No, only specific ones are legal via a hire scheme. Not just one owned by Tom, Dick or Harry

If I had a choice between the city roads being full of cars (current situation) or escooters (and cycles), I'd take the latter. Scooters move past my house silently but too many cars think the 30 limit is a suggestion to be ignored at the expense of a huge amount of tyre and wind noise.

Pfft... People should stop being such lazy ***** and just walk like any normal human would, or get a bicycle if it's several miles and you cannot manage your time properly.
Segways didn't revolutionise anything and neither will these... And for anyone claiming walking difficulties, just get a wheelchair - You can carry more shopping that way.

Never had a problem with escooters.

Been nearly mown down by old folks going too fast in their mobility deathtraps on pavements who expect you to dive into oncoming traffic so they don't have to slow down though.

They are a great idea but the tiny wheels and large number of absolute ***** riding them makes it hard to get too on board with them. Most of them I see ridden are by yoots who just fly out of side roads with barely a look who jump between pavement and road as they see fit.

Somewhat of a come down from driving a big tractor unit from an articulated lorry! :) I can only excuse him if he was wearing his monocle. I like monocles.

When I was in Valencia, Spain in Sept, people could use e-scooters in the cycle lanes and require to wear a helmet.

The way the teens are riding them at stupid speeds in pedestrianised areas here is stupid.
