wont boot

hi guys,
one of my pc's wont boot, on start up it says boot disc failure insert system disc.
this still happens even if i use a different H/D.

any ideas?

wont boot from cd, gets to where it says starting windows then just stays there.
changed hd
changed mem
changed ide cable
is it the mum board gone do you think?
 
Hmm I think it's a prob from ur mobo there.. since u said that u tried a diff drive and it still wouldn'd boot and it's also not detecting your hdd's... what mobo have u got there? also what psu?
 
Attempt to boot from an ubuntu live cd. That should work without fail as long as your motherboard is alright, cd drive works, processor works, and ram at least slightly works.

I think your hard drive is dead, not your motherboard. Testing so far is not conclusive however.
 
I assume you have tried resetting the BIOS that or rebuild and install was usualy my way of fixing the error, but could be a lot of things.
