Since Bunac has just opened its 2011 Work Canada programme. I was wondering if any other OcUKers had applied this year?

I have applied to go this year :) - I was wondering if anyone else from OcUK had applied as well. Be nice to get to know someone before I get out there on my own.

Have you been Magnolia?

From my understanding you need to prove that you have $3000CD in your bank before you fly out

I am open to anything really. I would like something retail just to start off...

What part of Canada do you stay in when you go over Cali?

p.s if you want any advice on anything out there give me a shout, I realise it can be quite daunting going out there without any job etc but its do able, believe me!

That would be great mate!. I'll think of A few things I want to know and get back to you if thats ok?

Is this thread the best place you think or should I email you in trust?

So can anyone with a British passport and under 30 apply? You don't need a degree or to be in uni?

Sounds pretty sweet.

Do they help you get a job over there, or is that all down to you?

From reading I believe that once you get there you get to go to a welcome meeting. Which will they discuss how to find a job, set up a bank account & how to find somewhere to live.

Thank for taking the time Owen to help out, I really appreciate it. I hope you don't mind me bombarding you with questions.

Did you apply to go with Bunac aswell?

How much money did you go with? (The requirements are you need to show you have $3000 Canadian to support yourself for the first 3 months. Is that really enough? Or is that overkill?)

How did the job hunt go? Did you have a job lined up before you went out there?

The last question I have and the most worrying for me is; How did you find somewhere to live? I understand Bunac give you a night in a hostel, and the ability to book a few more days there. But I am very worried about finding somewhere to live quickly.

Thanks again.

Ah ok. I have an aunt who lives in Montreal anyway so could stay with her while sorting a job out.

Cheers for posting this OP, might have some new plans now :D

That would be great if you had somewhere to live already sorted out :D
Let me know if you plan on going.

Thank you Owen for the reply. I really do appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

As I have never been to Canada I am a bit lost on where I want to go. Yes you can look up all these places, but as I am sure you can vouch for, it's not the same as actually being there.
I am thinking about going to Toronto as I love the city life of London. I have also been lucky enough to go to New York a few times and I love the atmosphere there. So as Toronto is the capital I am taking a wild guess that it will be the closest thing to the London/NY experience.

What did you think of Vancouver?

I see that you stayed in Whistler. A few other people I have spoken to also rave about how much they loved Whistler. The 11 bedroom house you stayed in sounds amazing!

Any more advice you can give on Vancouver and Whistler would be greatly appreciated. Also any advice on Toronto. I know you didn't stay there. But if you knew anyone that did?

That's given me a lot to think about. Thank you :)
I'll let you know if there is anything else I would like to know.

Thanks owen

I have a couple more questions for you Owen if you don't mind.

Firstly what did you bring with you to Canada? It must be much different then packing for a holiday.

Secondly the job you had, was it good hours? Did you get much of a social life?
How was the pay? After paying bills and food etc, did you have much money to buy other things you wanted?

Can I ask why you don't have enough points now & what will be changing in the next 15 months?

Just to let everyone know through my experience. Once you have your reserved Bunac place, they then email you with all the forms that you have to send to the Canadian Embassy.

I have done that and have been told if I get accepted that it will take around 6 weeks for the total process. I'll let you know any updates

Just to let everyone know (I think I am about 75% through the process of getting my visa)

I paid Bunac the fee. I then received an email from them telling me that I have a place on their programme.

The next step was to get a police check done. After that I must include it in the forms that they had emailed me to fill out to then send to the Canadian Embassy in Paris.
In those forms is a proof of funds letter.
All I had to do was take it to my bank and get them to sign it to prove that on that day I had over £2000 in my bank account.

Once that was all done I sent the forms off to Paris. About a week later I got a confirmation saying that I had passed stage 1 (I assume this is just a double check that I have sent all the correct forms) The next step was then to pay the £90 admin fee. I then did this by wire transfer and uploaded a proof of payment letter to the link they had emailed to me.

A few days later I received another email telling me that they had received my proof of funds. The next email I got (last week) was to tell me that my application had been forwarded to London for the next stage of evaluation.

After reading on the Bunac facebook page it is looking like this process takes approximately 3 weeks. After that you will either receive and email telling you that you have been accepted. Or a letter through the post explaining the reasons why you have been rejected. The email also stated that if rejected the reimbursement process would start. So at least you don’t loose your money.

Once the acceptance email has been received people have been booking their flights. So it looks like that is the final stage. If this last step does take 3 weeks, then the whole process has only took about 5-6 weeks.

I hope I have helped some people who are also (thinking about) applying this year. Any questions anyone has I would be happy to help :)
Also anyone that is going this year, it would be nice to meet before we take off :)

Got my VISA through this week :) so I am all set to go.
Everyone else in this thread who has got their Visa or waiting on it, where do you plan to go & when do you plan to leave?

I'm going to Ottawa (Only because my girlfriend live's there). The first time I went I did a ski season in Whistler which was amazing. If I had the choice I would probably stay in Vancouver in the summer and Whistler in the winter.

What are you planning on doing jrwagh333?

I have got my heart set on going to Toronto but I have heard nothing but good things about Vancouver so I may switch to there, I am not sure. I am going to have to do a lot of reading/research.

It's a shame you are not going to Vancouver or Toronto Hyper as it would be nice to go with someone who is also going on their own from OcUK

I'm flying to Toronto on the 31st with canadian affair so i'll be on that plane if your about :)

canadianaffair.com is by far the cheapest place to find flights btw. i must have taken about 10 flights with them now and sometimes I get singles for £129!

Toronto is a great city, I think the choice is definitely between there or Vancouver.

I suppose it depends what you want to do which decides where to go.

Toronto is big, so lots of action, good shopping, lots of jobs. You are near to Niagara falls and New York if you want.

With Vancouver the location is beautiful, a big city aswell, beaches in and around the city which are awesome in summer. Also you are close to local mountains and Whistler if you want to ski in the winter. Also you are close to the Rockies.

Ah don't think I will be leaving that soon. But thank you for the info on Toronto and Vancouver, I really appreciate it :D

As much as I would like to go on one of BUNAC's group flights. It's going to cost £900+. Now I have to way up the pro's and con's of going it alone
