For as long as i can remember i've heard the "while" used when talking about time.

That just says do work while the time is between 9 and 5:30, not 9 while 5:30.

Loads of people where I live say "9 while 5" - I think it's a northern dialect thing.

I personally would say "9 till 5".

I've always used 9 to 5. 'To' is perfectly acceptable and makes most sense. 'To' means the same thing as 'until' if used in the context of referring to a period of time.

I agree. To is perfectly fine substitution for until in this context.

Trivia: saying: [time] while [time], has been immortalised in rock lexicon (on vinyl).
