My friend told me the other day about this thing called Pom Rate, where 40 years ago the australian government started a scheme where it offered workers flights to Aus for a tenner and apparently they are restarting it as a 40 year anniversary thing and because they need workers, anyboyd heard about this?

She said it was on Radio 2, but found nothing there, searched for it and found these articles: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...aide-Australia-tries-lure-talented-Brits.html

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-359545/Ten-Pound-Poms-II.html

but thats it really, and neither of those have any actual details in them. One says "the south australian government's website has job details" etc. but having found that website it just returns a "document contains no data" error.

I'd be interested in this, not having any luck finding work over here and I've already applied for some jobs abroad, I really wanted this job working on energy yield on wind farms in Brazil (that is a pretty awesome job) but doubt if I'll hear anything more from that.

Anyway, if anyone knows any more about this I'd be glad to hear it, is anyone else considering applying for anything abroad? Share, its fun to share.

yeah, seems to be one of those "yeah I heard somethin...." things but no one actually knows. I dont think they'd let you fly for a tenner or anything but they said they'd fast track your visas and the quality of life in Australia is really good. They are running out of water thoguh so I'd go for a year or so and then move on I think.

There is a specialist skills list (forgot the exact name) where if you are trained in a certain needed profession you get fast tracked into the country with a visa and everything.

Me and the lass were looking at it with her profession being on the list (teacher) but my own profession was not on the list making things somewhat more complicated for me

There hasn't been any publicity about that on this side of the pond. I'd be surprised if it was renewed because as far as I can tell there's still plenty of brits migrating to NZ and OZ (I personally know of two who I met in the UK who made the move in the last 12 months).

My old man's family moved from Sommerset to Oz on the 10 quid scheme in the early 60s. They came over on the HMS Canberra and worked on a farm for several years before they were allowed to make their own fortunes. We're all still here two with half the family scattered around New South Wales and the other half on this side of the Tasman...

Is it just me who quickly glanced the thread title and thought it said "Work in Australia, Porn Rate"?

The water situation is solvable, in Perth for example 15-20% of all drining water comes from a desalination plant - de-salination of water is costly energy wise however they were clever enough to have the power to the plant come directly from wind power.

This is going to become much more common across most of Australia.

Ah so this is were the 10 pound pom came from.

Most of them ended up in Sailsbury :p :(

This was the reason my dad went to Australia all those years ago, although he spent 10 days (I think) on a cruise ship getting there which was apparently quite jolly.
